Blackford bests Starfires (09/30/03)

South Adams won the opening game, but couldn’t go any further in a 17-21, 21-13, 21-18, 21-16 loss to the Class 3A No. 10 Blackford Bruins Monday.

Kelly Mertz did her usual, pacing the Starfires (7-13) with 12 kills. She also led the team with 27 digs — more than twice as many as her next closest teammate — and a pair of blocks.

Alyssa Miller finished with 21 assists and 13 digs. LeeAnn Snyder had one block and three aces.

The South Adams junior varsity team took a loss to Blackford 21-1, 17-21, 21-8. The freshman team pulled off a dramatic three-game win 21-14, 21-23, 25-24.

The next match for the Starfires is at Woodlan today at 6 p.m.

Fort freshmen win again

The Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team continued its dominating season Monday with a 15-13, 15-9 victory over the Marion Local Flyers.

The Tribe (12-1) got six points and seven digs from Lauren Wenning. Abby Niekamp had seven points and five assists, and Holly Stein added six assists.

Sam Staugler had a team-high five kills, and Jodi Tobe added three. Brittany Brackman finished with 15 digs, and Rachel Stahl and Sara Fortkamp each had seven.

Tribe shut out

Marion Local was too much for Fort Recovery’s freshman football team, defeating the Indians 48-0 Monday.

Fort tickets

Tickets for Fort Recovery’s football game at Marion Local Friday will go on sale Thursday in the high school office.

Tickets will be available from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday. They will also be sold in the middle school office Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Pre-sale tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the gate will be $5.

Turkey chase

Wayne and Union County Easter Seals will host at turkey chase Saturday, Nov. 15. The event will include a 7k road race, a 2 1/2 mile historic walk, a one-mile fun run and a kiddie run.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. on the day of the event in the Centerville High School auxiliary gym west of the football field. The kiddie run will start at noon with the fun run at 12:30 p.m. and the 7K at 1 p.m.

The entry fee for those for those who sign up by Nov. 12 is $14 for the 7K, $14 for the walk and $2 for the fun run.
