Blackford blasts Starfires (04/07/05)

HARTFORD CITY — After taking a loss in their season opener, the Blackford Bruins were not fooling around Wednesday. Blackford racked up 10 third-inning runs as it crushed the South Adams Starfire baseball team 15-1 in five innings.
South Adams (0-2) trailed 3-0 before the third, when the Bruins blew the game wide open. The Starfires managed one run in the top of the fourth, and Blackford scored twice in the bottom of the fourth for the final margin.
Craig Neuenschwander accounted for two of the Starfires’ three hits, and their only run. Lukas Baumgartner also had a single.
Mike Farris took the loss, allowing nine runs — six earned — one nine hits in 21/3 innings.
JC JV smashes Jets
MONROE — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team used a big sixth inning to put the Adams Central Jets away Wednesday in an 11-3 victory.
The Patriots led 5-0 after three innings, but Adams Central scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to tighten things up. Jay County responded with a six-run sixth to take control for good.
Travis Towell led the Patriot effort by going 3-for-4 with a double. Luke Goetz and Justin Mann were each 2-for-4 with a double, and Tom McCowan went 2-for-5.
R.J. Fuller got the win as he pitched three scoreless and hitless innings. He struck out three and walked four.
Koesters leads FR
ST. HENRY, Ohio — Anne Koesters picked up two of the three wins for the Fort Recovery junior high track teams at St. Henry Tuesday. The girls team finished third, and the boys were fourth.
Koesters dominated the throwing events, winning the discus by nearly 20 feet with a toss of 89 feet, nine inches. She took first in the shot put by more than a foot at 28 feet, 101/2 inches.
Jordan Hess picked up the only other Tribe victory as he cleared eight feet in the boys pole vault.
Softball league
There will be a meeting for the 2005 Men’s Berne Summer Slow Pitch Softball League April 19.
The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion hall in Berne. The entry fee for the league is $300 per team.

Portland Junior League draft day will be Saturday.
Drafting will begin at 9 a.m. with the Sandy Koufax league. Willie Mays will follow at 10 a.m., with Pee Wee Reese at 11 a.m. The Minor League softball draft will be at 2 p.m., followed by the major league at 3 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
