Bluffton nets 3-2 win over Jay County

Patriots lose two three-set thrillers

An impressive rally at No. 2 singles wasn’t enough to overcome a three-set marathon defeat as Jay County High School’s girls varsity tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision against Bluffton Thursday.

The Patriots (1-2) got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

But Jay County dropped three-set decisions at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, with the doubles match lasting two and a half hours.

The Patriots’ Kelly Hess fell behind 1-4 in her match at No. 2 singles against Bluffton’s Julie Corati, but rallied to win the first set 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker) and closed out the second set 6-1.

Winning at No. 3 singles by an impressive margin was Daniela Harringer, who beat Bluffton’s Danieele Geisel 6-1, 6-0.

The two most competitive matches were at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, where Jay County’s Kristen Klatt (No. 1 singles) and Erin Schmiesing and Whitney Schemnaur couldn’t finish the job after opening-set wins.

Schmiesing and Shemenaur won the first set in a tiebreaker against Bluffton’s Breanna Sprunger and Tess Crickard, but eventually fell 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 4-6.

Klatt lost to Bluffton’s Mallory King by a 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 margin.

At No. 1 doubles, Bluffton’s Christina Yoder and Audrey Ballinger beat Jay’s Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers 6-2, 6-1.

Jay County won Thursday’s reserve match 4-1.

Winners for JCHS (1-2) were Amanda Hicks (8-2 at No. 2 singles), Stephanie Homan (8-1 at No. 3 singles), Niki Guntle and Brianne Morrical (8-3 at No. 1 doubles) and Jessica DeRome and Shonda Sutton (9-7 at No. 2 doubles).

Jay County will be back in action Monday at Blackford.

CORRECTION

A story in Wednesday’s edition of The Commercial Review incorrectly reported the results of a junior varsity doubles match.

In that match, Jay County’s Jessica DeRome and Jenae Horn won 8-4 over Marion’s Sheyanna Davis and Ashley Everett.

Golf team falls

Tyler Johnston’s meet medalist round of 37 wasn’t enough as Jay County High School’s boys varsity golf team dropped its opening dual meet of the season to Wapahani by a 164-170 margin.

Wapahani’s top four players all shot between 40 and 42, allowing the Raiders to prevail.

Alex Hunt had the No. 2 score for Jay County with a 40. Other scores for JCHS: Nathan McClung 45 and Adam Foster 48.

Todd Clark and Austin Simmons shared team-low honors for Wapahani with rounds of 40.

In reserve action, Jay County won 207-219.

Josh Hall had a 46 for Jay County, which got rounds of 49 from Josh Thornburg and Jesse Shawver and a 63 from Ben Freeman.

Jay County will play Saturday in the Bellmont Invitational.
