Boyles named top athlete (05/01/04)
Collegiate Check-up
Brad Boyles has been a busy man at Bluffton College. He was recognized for his contributions to the school last month.
The South Adams graduate received the A.C. Burcky Award, which is presented to Bluffton’s outstanding male senior athlete each year.
Boyles was a three-year starter on both the men’s basketball and tennis teams. He was an All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player in basketball this year, and has been named to the All-HCAC team twice in tennis.
He earned an HCAC player of the week award in basketball this season, and ranked 27th in the country with a 58.2 field goal percentage.
Boyles still had more to accomplish after winning the Burcky Award as he led the Beaver tennis team to its best finish ever in the HCAC men’s tennis tournament. He brought home a pair of runner-up finishes, as Bluffton also finished in second place with 51 points.
Transylvania ran away with the title with 90 points, and Franklin was third with 48.
The first runner-up finish for Boyles came at No. 2 singles, where he dropped his championship match to Transylvania’s Jody Mitchell 6-2, 6-0. He and SA grad Kyle Sprunger teamed to finish second at No. 2 doubles as well.
Sprunger lost his championship at No. 4 singles 6-1, 7-5 to Matt Clayton of Transylvania.
Pete Martin and Zack Nussbaum, a couple of other South Adams graduates, also competed in the tournament.
Martin placed third at No. 5 singles, defeating Jay Newell of Manchester in his final match 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Zack Nussbaum lost his final match 6-3, 6-1 to Matt Delavernge of Anderson to place sixth.
Martin and Nussbaum also teamed to place sixth at No. 3 doubles.
McClung 1st in Michigan
After missing the early part of the season Jay County graduate Kerri McClung has given the Bowling Green women’s track team a boost.
The senior outdistanced the field in the shot put at the Hillsdale (Mich.) Relays in last weekend. She had a winning throw of 14.87 meters.
McClung also fared well at the 2004 All-Ohio Track and Field Championships Saturday, April 17. Her top finish was a second-place mark in the shot put at 14.3 meters.
She was also 17th in the hammer throw at 41.18 meters.
Locals powering USF
Amanda Minch closed out her final home game for the St. Francis softball team in style. Carrie Nichols is looking like she’ll be able to fill the senior’s shoes.
The pair of former Starfires, along with Fort Recovery graduate Sarah Schmitz, have taken leadership roles for the Cougars.
Minch racked up a pair of doubles in her last home contest, the second game of a double-header split with Marian Thursday, April 22. Nichols, a freshman, had a double.
Minch also pounded Siena Heights in a double-header split Wednesday. She finished 4-for-4 in the first game with a trio of RBIs.
She followed that with a 2-for-4 effort in the night cap with two RBIs.
Nichols singled and scored once in the first game, and then went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second. Schmitz ripped a two-run double for the Cougars (26-24).
Nichols has shown her ability to lead the offense with her power.
She hit her Mid-Central Conference leading seventh home run of the year against Purdue University-North Central Sunday, April 18. She added a pair of doubles in the second game of the double-header, and had three RBIs in the first game.
Minch had two runs in the second game, and Schmitz added a double.
Beavers win title
Amanda Habegger paced the Bluffton track teams Saturday, April 24, leading the women to their first ever Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Beavers scored 192 points, finishing well ahead of second-place Anderson (114).
Habegger, a graduate of South Adams, posted the top finish for Bluffton in the 100-meter hurdles. She won the event by more than a half a second over Julie Heckman of Manchester in 15.95 seconds.
She finished the pole vault in second place at nine feet.
The junior added a second-place effort in the 400-meter hurdles in 1-minute, 6.23 seconds. Freshman Jenny Lehman, another former Starfire, was seventh in the event in 1:18.48.
Habegger also teamed with Jana Hammer, Rita Muether and South Adams graduate Steph Welch to win the 4x400-meter relay in 4:06.99. Habegger, Muether, Hammer and Cindy Allan were first in the 4x100-meter relay in 49.77.
Welch was fifth in a pair of events. She had a leap of 15 feet, 91/2 inches in the long jump, and posted a height of 4 feet, 113/4 inches in the high jump.
She was also sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.33.
Former Starfire Jason Lehman helped the men’s team to a third-place finish at the meet. He was in on two second-place relay finishes.
Lehman and South Adams graduate Troy Baumer teamed with Shandon North and Colby Bright to finish second in the 4x100-meter relay in 43.81. Lehman, North, Johnny Ichrist and Dan Rosebeck were the runners-up in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:26.22.
Lehman stayed busy, finishing fifth in the triple jump at 38 feet, 71/2 inches, and seventh in the long jump at 20 feet,1/4 inch. He and Baumer each ran both hurdle races as well.
Baumer was fourth in the 110-meter event in 16.17, with Lehman behind him in 16.34. Baumer matched his fourth-place effort in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.71, and Lehman was seventh in 1:02.12.
The HCAC title for the women’s team came on the heels of an All-Ohio performance Saturday, April 17.

Welch finished 15th in the high jump at the championships at four feet, 111/2 inches. She was 28th in the 800-meter run in 2:37.91.

Bryum splits pair
Jay County graduate Pete Byrum picked up a win and a loss in his two most recent starts for the Indiana Tech baseball team. He was the hard-luck loser in a 2-1 loss to Madonna Saturday, April 24, and won in a 13-1 blowout over Concordia Friday, April 16.
Byrum was outstanding against Madonna, but didn’t get any run support in the defeat. He allowed two runs on nine hits in eight innings. He struck out five and walked two in the loss.
The senior dominated Concordia in his victory, allowing just one run on seven hits in six innings. He struck out three batters and did not give up a walk.
Byrum leads the Warriors (26-18) with a 1.90 ERA, and is 4-3 on the season. He has struck out 35 batters and issued just 10 walks in 52 innings of work.
Sprunger finishes year
Brett Sprunger, a South Adams graduate, ended his season with the University of Indianapolis golf team at the 2004 NCAA II Great Lakes Regional #3 Monday, April 19. The Greyhounds placed 14th in the 19-team field.
Sprunger had a better first day than second, shooting 81 and 85 for a 166 tournament total.
He had a better day a few days earlier at the Tri-State University Bill Gettig Invitational. He opened with a 78 and had a second-round 83 for a 161 total.
Sprunger finished his season with an 80.69 average per 18 holes.
Alberson, Heitkamp hot
Fort Recovery graduate Bob Heitkamp and South Adams graduate Kyle Alberson each had big hits for the Bluffton College baseball team in a recent series against Mount St. Joseph. Still, they could not pull the 8-26 Beavers out of their slump.
Heitkamp racked up a pair of doubles and four hits in Bluffton’s 26-15 loss on Friday, April 16. He also clobbered his second home run of the year in Saturday’s double-header.
Alberson had a double in the Friday contest, and added two hits, including a double, Saturday.
Alberson lifted his average to .316 on the season, good for second on the team. He leads the Beavers with 36 hits, 30 RBIs, 26 runs, 11 doubles, eight home runs, a .409 on-base percentage and a .623 slugging percentage.
Although his batting average is still just .269, Heitkamp is second to Alberson in slugging percentage at .558. He has 14 hits, 15 runs, 23 RBIs and four home runs on the year.
Four from JC lead Ancilla
Mitch Waters is still the top hitter for the Ancilla College baseball team. His former Jay County teammate Kyle Champ is right on his heels.
And fellow former Patriots Josh Jellison and Devon Phillips are doing their part.
Waters is hitting .387 on the season. He leads the team with 29 hits and 18 RBIs.
He also has six doubles, two stolen bases and 11 runs.
Champ is second on the team in batting average at .373, and tied for second with 19 hits. He has three doubles, 10 RBIs, 10 runs and three stolen bases on the year.
Phillips has five hits in limited playing time. He has a double, six runs, one RBI and one stolen base.
Waters has also taken to the mound for Ancilla, posting a 4.22 ERA He has struck out 22 batters in 211/3 innings.
Jellison has a 3.03 ERA. He has notched 40 strikeouts in 322/3 innings.
