Bruggeman, Miller lead Jay Co. (09/09/03)

The Patriots are halfway to an Olympic Athletic Conference repeat.

Jay County’s girls soccer team took a 2-1 victory over the host Anderson Highland Scots Monday thanks to a couple of goals late in the first half. The win moved the team to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

The first half was controlled mostly by the Patriots, and it Sarah Miller finally made it pay off. She kept pusing toward the goal and got a score with 6:30 left in the first half for a 1-0 lead.

Jamie Bruggeman waited until almost the last moment to get her goal. She shot from the right side and bounced the ball off the far post and into the net with just two seconds to go before halftime.

Anderson Highland cut the lead to 2-1 with a penalty kick less than two minutes into the second half, but neither team scored the rest of the way.

Jay County outshot the Scots 15-8 in the contest, with Anderson Highland taking just one shot on goal in the first half.

Bruggeman led the Patriots with five shots, and Renae Laux had three.

The next contest for Jay County is Saturday at South Adams at 10 a.m.

Jay netters roll

Kurtis Hess and Randy Evans scored shutout wins Monday to lead the Jay County boys tennis team to a 4-1 win at home over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

Hess improved to 8-3 on the year with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chad Keith, as the team pulled even with a 4-4 record. Evans blasted Dale Barker at No. 3 singles for his 6-0, 6-0 win.

Derek Powell completed the singles sweep at the No. 2 spot, topping Kris McNeary 6-2, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles pair of Chip Feazell and Adam Paxson scored the other Patriot win of the evening, handling Brandon LeRoy and Shawn Haisley 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 1 doubles Wil Goodrich and Tyler Rigby fell to David Sheffield and Kyle Holt 6-3, 6-4.

Jay County’s junior varsity team continued it’s success, moving to 7-1 with a 4-2 victory.

Matt Peterson and Chad Miller took singles wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots respectively. Peterson topped David Guiden 8-6, and Miller blanked Zach Shipman 8-0.

The Patriots also took victories in both doubles matches, with Jeff Sims and Travis Smith winning at No. 1 against Josh Barnes and Josh Osborne 8-2. Todd McCowan and Jason Crouch beat the same Rebel pair at No. 2 doubles 8-1.

At No. 3 singles James Heare lost to Donnie Hyso 8-2, and Adam Arnold dropped his match to Guiden 6-4.

The next match for the Patriots is Wednesday at South Adams at 4:30 p.m.

Patriot golf loses

Senior Deanna Drinkut turned in one of her best scores, but it wasn’t enough as the Jay County girls golf team lost to Winchester Monday 192-229.

Drinkut opened well, scoring a par on the par-4 first hole, and continued a solid round. She had five consecutive bogies from holes three through seven to finish with a team-best 50.

Jenna Tudor had the best round on the day for Winchester, finishing with four pars and a birdie for a 44.

Cara Geesaman had a couple of pars late in her round for the Patriots to recover from a rough start and finish with a 59. Brianne Morrical also shot a 59.

Blake Hendricks returned to action with a 61 to round out the varsity scoring. Angie Stultz came in with a 63, and Katey Kohler shot a 67.

Jay County plays against Yorktown and Wes-Del today at 4:30 p.m.

EJ solid at Jamboree

East Jay participated in its football Jamboree Monday along with West Jay and Hartford City. In its two quarters against Hartford City, the Chiefs won 7-0.

Justin Mann connected on a long touchdown for East Jay, hitting Clint Muhlenkamp for a 75-yard touchdown pass. Drake Guntle chipped in the extra point.

Mann finished 2-for-2 passing, adding a 10-yard completion to Kyle Smith. Michael Jobe paced the defense with four tackles.

Fort tickets

Tickets for Fort Recovery’s football game Friday night at Versailles will go on sale Thursday.

Tickets will be sold in the high school office Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be available in the middle school office Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Pre-sale tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the gate will be $5.

Going on the road

Portland’s Ben Vance will be taking his baseball show on the road.

Vance was recently selected to play for the Coast to Coast Amateur Baseball Stars 11-12-year-old team after his tryout in Fort Wayne. The 12-year-old General Shanks sixth grader will make a week-long trip to Puerto Rico next summer as part of his participation with the team.

Fort 500 this weekend

The Fort 500 Snowmobile Grass Drags will be held this weekend at Fort Recovery’s Ambassador Park.

The Saturday session will begin with testing at noon, and racing will start at 1 p.m. Testing Sunday will start at 10 a.m. with racing to begin at noon.
