INDIANAPOLIS - The gymnastics state finals will be in Muncie. The girls basketball state finals will spend another year in the Summit City. And the IHSAA will have a new commissioner.
All of those announcements came as part of the IHSAA's meeting Friday, with commissioner Blake Ress announcing his retirement.
Ball State University's Worthen Arena will be the host site for the gymnastics state finals, which had been at Perry Meridian High School for 33 years. Jay County has had an athlete advance to the state meet five times since 2003, with Hannah Williams and Nadlie Runyon combining for three state medals.
The girls basketball state finals will be played at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum for the second consecutive season. Ress, who has been commissioner of the IHSAA since 2000, will retire effective Feb. 1 and the executive committee has already started its search for his successor.
Ludy singles in win
HYANNIS, Mass. - Josh Ludy picked up a hit for the Wareham Gateman as part of their 6-1 victory Friday over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
The 2008 Jay County High School graduate singled in the second inning of the victory for Wareham of the Cape Cod League. He also had a walk in the fourth inning.
Pee Wee reorganizes
Jay County Pee Wee Football has named a new board of directors and elected officers for 2010.
The board of directors includes Chuck Denney, Ned Rees, Gene Hummel, Doug Inman, Emily Goodrich-Roberts, John Faulkner and Shane Hill. Rees will serve as president for 2010 with Denney as vice president, Goodrich-Roberts as secretary and Doug Inman as treasurer.
"The Board of Directors has adopted new by-laws and has put systems in place to ensure financial checks and balances, said Rees in a recent press release. The board hopes the community continues to support the league as we work to reorganize and secure the organization financially."
The pee wee league, established in 1970, is for Jay County children in grades three through six.
Fisher wins pair
Fisher Packing picked up a pair of wins Friday, defeating Winchester 8-7 and 16-8 in Portland Junior League Sandy Koufax baseball.
Also Friday, Graphic Printing topped Portland Moose 14-9.
Devon Roosa paced Fisher Packing in its first win, driving in two runs and scoring once as part of a six-run fourth inning. Jared Alig and Sean Winget each had two runs and three RBIs in the second game, and Michael Bruggeman hit a home run.
Richie Keen blasted three home runs and had five RBIs and four runs in the victory for Graphic.[[In-content Ad]]
