Bulldogs split tourney pair (07/03/04)

Local Roundup

The Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team picked up its second win Thursday, and nearly had a third before falling in nine innings.

The Bulldogs opened play in the Anderson July 4th Holiday Tournament with a 9-3 victory over host Anderson. It rallied with four runs in the seventh inning against Seymour, only to fall by a 6-5 score in nine innings.

Jay-Randolph (2-10) wasted no time in getting the offense going as Jay County graduate Heath Williams opened the bottom of the first inning against Anderson with a double. The hit started a three-run inning, and JR scored three more times in the second.

Williams put another three-spot on the board with a three-run homer in the fifth. He finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.

Tyler Croyle and Scott Schwieterman each added two hits and two runs, and Cory Waldrath had two hits and three RBIs.

The offense supported Jay County junior Josh Atkinson, who went the distance and did not allow a run until the sixth inning as his team built its 9-0 lead. He allowed three runs on seven hits in the contest, and also finished 1-for-2 with a pair of runs.

Jay-Randolph trailed 5-1 in the second game, but got on a roll in the seventh inning. It scored four times, starting with a double by Jay County junior Josh Shatto, to force extra innings.

The Bulldogs had a chance to pull ahead in the eighth, but Jacob Swell was thrown out at the plate. Seymour then took the win with a bases loaded infield single off Shatto.

Shatto took the loss, despite allowing just one run on three hits in 22/3 innings. He finished 1-for-2 with a run.

Tilmon Clark paced the offense by going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Williams had one hit and scored two of JR’s four runs. Jay County junior Cory Locke also had a hit in the contest.
