Bulldogs win 3rd (07/06/04)

Local Roundup

The Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team scored runs in five of its six trips to the plate Saturday in a 6-5 win over Bristol. The victory put the Bulldogs at 2-2 in the Anderson July 4th Holiday Tournament after a 5-1 loss to Mishawaka Friday.

Against Bristol, JR scored single runs in each of the first four innings, but the visiting team posted two runs in the second and two in the fourth for the tie. However, after a scoreless fifth, the Bulldogs (3-11) pulled in front for good.

Daniel Bogue got the rally going as he reached base on an error. Then Cory Waldrath gave the team all the runs it would need with a two-run homer.

Bristol responded with one run in the seventh inning, but could not tie the game as Bogue went the distance on the hill. Bogue (2-1) allowed five runs — four earned — on seven hits.

Waldrath went 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs and three RBIs. Bogue scored twice and drove in one run.

Nick Patterson finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jacob Sewell added a 2-for-3 effort with one run. Jay County graduate Heath Williams was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Jay-Randolph didn’t score until the fifth inning against Mishawaka, tying the game at 1-1. But, Mishawaka immediately posted three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Waldrath suffered the loss, allowing five runs — one earned — on seven hits in six innings. He was hurt by six Bulldog errors.

Cory Friend scored the lone run, and Scott Schwieterman had the only RBI.

Rockets split Monday

A big seventh-inning rally allowed the Portland Rockets to split its pair of games with LaMargarita Blues Monday. They dropped the first game 9-4, and won the second 8-5.

Portland trailed 5-3 in the seventh inning of the second game, even after Jay County graduate Josh Jellison had a one-hit shutout through four innings.

Still, Mitch Waters, another Jay County graduate, singled to open the Portland seventh. Matt Cannizzo added another single, and Pete Milas beat out a bunt single to load the bases.

Matt Gard came up with a clutch two-run single to tie the game, only to be topped by Ryan Rammel. Rammel went deep with a three-run, walk-off home run to give the Rockets the 8-5 victory.

Portland (19-8, 8-2 Fort Wayne League) had trouble in the first game as LaMargarita got to Neil Schmitz for four runs in the second inning and five in the third.[[In-content Ad]]
