Bye wins first meet as Tiger (10/11/03)
Collegiate Check-up
A week of practice? Yeah, that’s enough.
Because of injuries Caleb Bye had been in the pool for only about a week before his first competition at Clemson University, but he won the three-meter diving event anyway with a score of 244.13.
Bye, a two-time state medalist at Jay County, helped his Tigers to a 252-184 victory over the LSU Tigers. He finished the three-meter event with 15 points more that LSU’s Andy Crum.
The freshman also did well in his one-meter debut with a fourth-place finish with 253.73 points. He joined teammates Eric Shulick and Marsh Lindley — an old rival of Bye’s from Jeffersonville, Indiana — to take three of the top four finishing spots in the event.
Hummel raising Rose
The Rose-Hulman football program still has some improving to do, but Jay County graduate Cameron Hummel definitely has it on the rise.
Hummel turned in another solid effort in a 17-13 Engineers’ victory over Washington University Sept. 27. The win marked the end to a nine-game losing streak against Washington, and lifted Rose-Hulman to 3-1 to already match last season’s win total.
Hummel finished 15-of-29 through the air for 153 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown pass to Joe Kachmar with 19 seconds to go in the first half. He also picked up 53 yards on the ground on 14 carries.
The Engineers slipped to 3-2 a week later with a 42-14 loss against a tough Trinity University team. Hummel went 12-of-17 for 45 yards, including a 10-yard Touchdown toss to Matt Horne.
The freshman picked up 17 yards rushing on eight carries.
Hummel stands as the team’s No. 2 rushes after five games, having carried the ball 60 times for 333 yards. He has ran in three touchdowns.
He has also gone 59-of-126 for 592 yards and five touchdowns through the air.
Conrad places eighth
The Taylor University cross country team had an outstanding day at the Huntington Invitational Oct. 4 thanks in part to South Adams graduate Christy Conrad.
The junior finished fourth on the Trojan team and eighth overall at the meet with a time of 21:02. Taylor was second as a team, with its top five runners all placing within the top 12.
Conrad also competed in the Greater Louisville Classic Sept. 27 and finished 115th. She ran in a time of 21:20.
Smith still on top
Erin Smith, a 2001 graduate of Jay County, continued to be the top scorer for the Anderson University golf team as she led it to fifth and seventh place finishes at the Manchester Invitational and DePauw Small College Classic respectively.
Smith was sixth individually at Manchester Oct. 6 after rounds of 86 and 98. She placed 20th at DePauw with a 167 (87-90).
Steiner stuffs Husson
South Adams graduate Scott Steiner had perhaps his best game of the season Sept. 27 as his Bluffton College football team scored a 36-6 victory over Husson.
Steiner racked up nine tackles in the contest, including one for a loss. He also had five tackles in the Beavers’ loss to Urbana last week.
Michael, Little shining
Former Jay County players Libby Michael and Jenni Little continue to play excellent volleyball for the Anderson University Ravens (18-7).
Michael had her best match of the last two weeks against conference rival Franklin on Oct. 1. She finished with 42 digs in the defeat, and also had a pair of assists.
She also had 31 digs against Ohio Dominican, 29 versus Asbury, 28 in a win over Augustana and 26 in a loss to Millikan.
Michael is statistically the best defensive player in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with 5.84 digs per game and 461 digs overall. She also ranks 20th in the nation in digs.
Little had by far her best outing of the season as she racked up 12 kills against Ohio Dominican. She added six against Franklin, and had five each versus Asbury and Millikan.[[In-content Ad]]
