Byrge takes 2nd in a row (06/11/07)

Local roundup

RUSHVILLE - Make it two for Kenny Byrge.

Byrge, a former Dunkirk resident and now a senior at Indiana University, won his second race in a row Saturday night. He followed up his win on the pavement at Mt. Lawn last week with a dirt-track victory at Rush County Fairgrounds.

The 2006 United Midget Racing Association champion qualified eighth at Rush County and then won his heat race. He took the feature lead after six laps and won ahead of Scott Petry and Oogie Goff.

The victory for Byrge tightened an already hotly contested points race in which he sits third with 666 points. Oogie Goff is first with 689, and Terry Goff is second with 676.

Larry Teegarden, Byrge's grandfather and car owner, sits second in the owners points behind Johnny Goff.

Cardinals split

GENEVA and SOUTH BEND - The Geneva Cardinals had a solid weekend, taking a double-header Saturday before pushing the top-ranked team in the state Sunday.

Geneva limited the Steel City Giants to a single run in each game Saturday, winning 7-1 and 3-1. It lost twice to the South Bend Senators - both times by 3-2 scores - on Sunday.

Erik Hisner powered the Cardinals (6-4) in Saturday's double-header with a double and a home run in the opener and a 3-for-3 effort with two doubles in game two. Corey Oetting also hit his third home run of the season in the sweep.

Nate Glant won the opening game, and Jared Baker took game two. Mark Miller also recorded a save in the second game.

Losing pitchers against the Senators were Andrew McFarland and Miller. In game two, Geneva held the early lead before stranding two runners in the top of the seventh and then giving up the game-winning run in the bottom.

Track, softball give honors

Jay County High School's softball and girls track teams recently held their awards ceremonies for the 2007 season.

Seniors Shae Keller and Morgan Locke were each named to the All-Olympic Athletic Conference team for softball. Pazia Speed, Trisha Champ and Amber Edmundson earned honorable mention.

All-conference honorees for girls track, as determined by results of the conference meet, were Amanda Johnson, Erika Hunt and Kylie Wellman.

Keller, Locke and Amanda Alberson earned four-year letters for softball, and Ashley Bunch and Trisha Champ each were three-year letter winners.

Four-year letters went to Allison Fullenkamp, Sara Garringer, Jessica Mosier and Nicole Pfeifer in girls track and Johnson, Hunt, Sarah Mescher and Stephanie Wellman picked up three-year letters.

Rockets still winless

The Portland Rockets are still looking for their first victory after dropping three games on the weekend. They fell 12-4 and 5-3 to the Steel City Giants at home Sunday after a loss Saturday to the Grand Lake Mariners.

Portland was up 2-0 with just one inning to play in the second game against Steel City, but two runners managed to get on base against Jay County graduate Chad Keen after he had thrown six innings of shutout ball. He gave way to Ryan Schmidt, but the Giants kept rolling to the tune of five runs as they pushed ahead and grabbed the win.

Jimmy Linder suffered the loss in game one.

Lenny Koesters powered the Rocket offense on the day with a pair of hits in each game. Shannon McCormick and Ryan Shell also had two hits apiece in the opener.[[In-content Ad]]
