Byrum picks up another win (04/28/03)
Collegiate Check-up
Going 1-0 in his last two starts for the Indiana Tech baseball team, Jay County graduate Pete Byrum has improved his season record to 4-2.
The Warrior junior earned his fourth win of the season for Indiana Tech (31-13) April 12 against the Tri-State Thunder. Byrum tossed five innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits.
He struck out three batters and walked one as he got plenty of offensive support in the 16-2 victory.
Byrum also tossed in a 9-8 loss to the Madonna Crusaders April 19. He started and allowed six earned runs in 52/3 innings. He gave up 11 hits while striking out three before giving way to teammate Jesse Hoover.
Hoover gave up three runs and took the loss in relief.
Byrum now carries a 3.69 ERA, third best among starters on the Indiana Tech squad.
He has tossed 312/3 innings, striking out 23 batters while allowing just three walks.
SA trio aides Bluffton
Kyle Sprunger, Brad Boyles and Pete Martin — all graduates of South Adams — played key roles for the Bluffton tennis team this year as it finished the season with a fifth-place showing at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
Sprunger had the best placing the conference tournament, winning the title at No. 4 singles for the second year in a row. The junior topped Franklin’s Steve McCoy 6-0, 6-1 and defeated Tim Robison of Manchester on his way to the title.
He also teamed with fellow junior Boyles to place fourth at No. 2 doubles. The pair finished the year 6-3 in the conference and 10-3 overall.
Sprunger was a perfect 9-0 in the conference and 10-3 overall in singles action.
Boyles played at No. 2 singles in the tournament, and defeated Derek Doddridge of Franklin in the first round 6-3, 6-1. He lost his second-round match to Manchester’s Ryan Limstromberg 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to place fourth.
Martin, a freshman, lost both of his singles matches in tournament play, but placed fourth in the tournament at No. 3 doubles with partner David Barnes.
McClung places eighth
The Bowling Green women’s track team placed seventh at the All-Ohio Championships April 12 with Jay County graduate Kerri McClung competing in a trio of events.
McClung’s best finish at the meet held in Columbus came in the shot put. She placed eighth with a toss of 45 feet, 5.25 inches.
The junior also competed in the hammer throw for a 10th-place finish at 158 feet, and took 17th in the discus at a distance of 124 feet, 10 inches.
Locals roll despite slump
The Bluffton baseball team is mired in a 1-11 slump, but the losing hasn’t effected the tremendous play of juniors Bob Heitkamp (Fort Recovery) and Kyle Alberson (South Adams).
The pair remain the top two hitters on the team, leading the way in every category. Heitkamp is currently hitting .451 — second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference — and Alberson has a .419 average, which is 70 points better than the No. 3 hitter on the squad.
Alberson hit his 10th home run of the season recently against Mount St. Joseph, setting a new single-season team record. With his senior season still ahead of him, Alberson already holds the Beavers’ career home run record with 24.
In addition to his 10 home runs, Alberson has seven doubles, a triple and has scored 23 runs. He leads the team with 29 RBIs and a .872 slugging percentage.
Heitkamp matched Alberson with a home run in the same 17-8 loss against Mount St. Joseph, his third of the season. He also has eight doubles, 13 runs, 15 RBIs and a .690 slugging percentage.
Bluffton is currently 6-20 this season.
