Byrum to Super Regional (05/10/03)
Collegiate Check-up
Thanks to a 21-10 win over Bethel in the NAIA Region VIII tournament championship game at Spring Arbor University in Michigan, Pete Byrum and his Indiana Tech Warrior baseball team will be hosting the Super Regional next week.
Indiana Tech also scored wins of Marian, 12-2, Aquinas, 16-14, and host Spring Arbor, 9-5, on the way to the title. No box scores were available from those games at press time, but Byrum did pitch in relief in three contests during the final week of the Warriors’ regular season.
Byrum, a 2000 graduate of Jay County, earned his second save of the regular season in his final outing. He tossed 11/3 innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits while preserving a 6-4 victory over Huntington College.
The junior also tossed 12/3 innings of scoreless and hitless relief April 27 in a 12-6 victory over Saint Xavier. A day earlier he had a one-hit, no-run effort to earn his first save of the year as he pitched 12/3 innings against Aquinas.
Byrum stands at 4-2 on the season with a pair of victories and a 3.22 ERA. He has 27 strikeouts against just three walks in 361/2 innings of work.
Big efforts at Butler
A pair of former Jay County athletes had good showings at the Butler Twilight track meet May 3.
Bowling Green junior Kerri McClung, JCHS class of 2000, won the shot put title among her three events. She took the victory with a toss of 13.52 meters.
She also placed fifth in the hammer throw at a distance of 48.01 meters, and took seventh in the discus with a throw of 39.9 meters.
Nick Hoffman, Jay County class of 2002, was 14th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56 seconds for his Ball State squad.
Waters rolling along
Jay County graduate Mitch Waters was cruising through his first season at Ancilla College according to the most recent update.
The freshman is the starting third baseman, and also occasional takes the mound.
Through his first 76 collegiate at bats, Waters was hitting .316 with 12 RBIs. He has a .358 on base percentage and a .368 slugging percentage.
Locals big at Bluffton
The Bluffton Beavers baseball team lost three straight games against Manchester College to close out a disappointing 2003 season at 8-25. Still, it was an outstanding year for Fort Recovery graduate Bob Heitkamp and South Adams graduate Kyle Alberson.
Heitkamp was the No. 2 hitter on the team, finishing the season with a .361 average. He three home runs, eight doubles, 16 runs scored and 17 RBIs on the season.
He finished with a .536 slugging percentage and a .398 on base percentage.
He was only outdone by Alberson, who had a team-best .404 batting average. He also led the team with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs and 25 runs.
Alberson’s slugging percentage was a phenomenal .843, and he also had a .500 on base percentage.
In addition to his success on the field, Heitkamp was one of 14 Bluffton athletes to be nominated for Verizon Academic All-America honors. Troy Baumer, a South Adams graduate who runs track for the Beavers, was also nominated for the award.
In order to be nominated, an athlete must have at least a 3.2 grade points average and be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Bluffton junior Kyle Sprunger, also a graduate of South Adams, was recently named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tennis team. He was the conference champion at No. 4 singles with a 9-0 season record, and teamed with former Starfire Brad Boyles to finish 10-3 on the year and fourth in the HCAC tournament.

South Adams graduate Brett Sprunger had two very good rounds to open NCAA II Great Lakes Regional play.
The University of Indianapolis freshman shot a first-round 79, and followed with a 77 in the second round to place 21st with one round to play. He shot an 85 in his final round of the season for a 241 overall at the regional meet.
His season average was an 82.46, and his low round of the year was a 74.[[In-content Ad]]
