Caffee leads destruction of Leo (04/17/04)

Justin Caffee was one of many Starfires to go wild Friday as the South Adams baseball team pounded the Leo Lions 17-2.

Caffee was perfect from the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with three doubles. He had five RBIs, three runs and one stolen base.

Three other Starfires had at least two hits as they scored twice in the first inning, four times in the fourth and broke the game open with seven runs in the third. South Adams scored four more runs in the fifth inning to end the contest.

Aaron Givens matched Caffee with three hits and five RBIs. He had one double and scored once.

Tyler Sprunger and Michael Yoder each had two hits. Yoder scored three times, and Doug Roop added two runs.

Kyle Neuenschwander was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion. He allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits in the five-inning win. He walked three and struck out one.

South Adams will be at home today against Fort Wayne South Side at 11 a.m.

Tribe victorious

The Fort Recovery track team rolled to victory Friday in the inaugural Fort Recovery Co-ed Relays.

The Tribe finished with 100 points, well ahead of National Trail’s 73 and Tri-Village’s 70 in the six-team event. The unique format featured two male and two female athletes from each team combining their efforts in each event.

Fort Recovery came away with victories in five out of the 13 events, including a pair of dominating wins in the shot put and discus.

Nick Hemmelgarn, Dick Payne, Holly Stein and Alicia Schwieterman teamed up for the shot put victory, combining for a distance of 130.06 feet to win by more than 11 feet. Hemmelgarn, Stein, Steve Westgerdes and Emily Wendel united to win the discus by more than 10 feet at 345.09 feet.

The Indians took a third field event with Wendel leading the way. She joined Kristi Westgerdes, Tom Roessner and John Vagedes to take the long jump at 69.03 feet.

Tom Roessner, Vicki Roessner, Matt Tobe and Julie Link squeaked out a win in the 4x400-meter relay in 4-minutes, 21 seconds.

Fort Recovery also won the tug-o-war competition.

The Tribe’s next meet is at Jay County Monday against the Patriots and the Mississinewa Indians at 6 p.m.

Fort teams take 2nd

Anne Koesters was the lone Indian to post a pair of wins Thursday as both Fort Recovery junior high track teams placed second.

Ansonia was first in the girls competition with 81 points, with Fort Recovery second at 34 and St. Henry with 30.

St. Henry took the win on the boys side with 592/3 points. Fort Recovery placed second at 531/3, and Ansonia notched 40 points.

Koesters controlled a couple of field events for the girls team.

She just pulled off a victory in the discus, winning by three inches with a toss of 74 feet, three inches. She took the shot put by more than four feet, dominating the event at 30 feet, six inches.

Adding wins for the girls team were Kinsey Wenning in the high jump at four feet, six inches, Tina Roessner in the 1,600-meter run in 6-minutes, 23 seconds, and Mindy Vogel in the 400-meter dash in 1:09.50.

The boys team was led by Michael Trobridge and Eric Lamm. Trobridge was first in the 100-meter dash in 13.05, while Lamm won the 400-meter dash in 58.64.

The pair joined teammates Austin Burkthard and Jeremy Schmitz to win the 4x100-meter relay in 52.56.

Fort Recovery also swept the points in the shot put, with Luke Bihn winning in 44 feet, 71/2 inches. Lucas Staugler was second at 41 feet, four inches, John Westgerdes was second in 38 feet, five inches and Alex Gehle was fourth in 37 feet.

Matt Vagedes was first in the pole vault at 8.75 feet.[[In-content Ad]]
