Caffee paces South Adams (05/26/04)

Local Roundup

Apparently the South Adams baseball team had been saving up some offense. It unloaded everything it had at Fort Wayne Harding Tuesday.

The Starfires posted 11 runs in the second inning en route to a 17-4, five-inning destruction of the host Hawks.

Both teams scored once in the first inning before South Adams exploded in the second. It added two runs in the third and three more in the fifth.

Justin Caffee powered the potent offense with two hits, including a double. He had three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.

Also posting two hits apiece were Kyle Neuenschwander, Kyle White and Craig Neuenschwander.

Kyle Neuenschwander had a double, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base, White finished with three RBIs and two steals and Aaron Givens drove in two runs. Tyler Sprunger had two runs and two stolen bases, Craig Neuenschwander scored twice and Michael Yoder added three runs.

Sprunger was the benefactor of the outburst of offense as he picked up the win. He allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits in three innings.

Givens and Tony Van Gelder each tossed one inning of relief.

South Adams is off until Monday, when it will play sectional host Heritage in semifinal action at 4 p.m.

Rockets roll

A veteran starter on the hill and 10 hits to support him got the job done for the Portland Rockets Tuesday.

South Adams graduate Matt Ousley got more than enough offense for a 6-2 Rocket victory over the LaMargarita Blues Tuesday.

Ousley allowed just one run on four hits in six innings for the win, tossing just 67 pitches. He struck out four batters before giving way to Jay County graduate Pete Byrum in the seventh.

Ryan Rammel was one of four Portland players with two hits, one of which was a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Tommy Pearce, Brandon Dillon and Brendan Cooley added two hits apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
