Cardinals rally in debut (06/01/05)

Baseball roundup

GENEVA — The Cardinals couldn’t have come up with a much more exciting way to christen their new home.

The team, which played last season as the Decatur Dragons, rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win their Geneva debut 4-3 over the South Bend Senators.

The Cardinals trailed 3-1 heading into the final frame, and player/manager Victor Canales led off the seventh by reaching base on an error. Travis Foster followed with a double to left field, and Alex Childers walked to load the bases with no outs.

Chris Anderson, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, took one for the team as he was hit by a pitch to bring pinch runner Landon Story to the plate. Geneva then scored the tying and winning runs without a hit, getting sacrifice fly balls from Ryan Bedwell and South Adams graduate Kyle White to win the game.

Robert Carroll picked up the victory as he tossed three innings in relief of Bryan Reid.

The Cardinals dropped their other two games of the weekend, losing the second half of the double-header to South Bend 9-1, and dropping by a 2-0 score to the Springfield Bulldogs Sunday.

Ryan Bedwell walked and scored the lone run against South Bend as Senator pitcher Sean Galiher tossed no-hitter. Bedwell stole second and third, and scored the run on as the throw to third base skipped into left field.

Geneva was limited to four hits against Springfield, one each by Danner Partridge, Alex Childers, Sean Cook and Story. Bryan Rumple took the loss, allowing just one unearned run in six innings.

Rockets win a pair

PORTLAND — The Portland Rockets trailed for the first time all year Saturday, but stayed perfect with a couple of victories over the Springfield Bulldogs, 9-3 and 7-0.

Portland was down 1-0 through an inning and a half, but scored three times in the bottom of the second and never trailed again. Phil Bruns paced the offense with a three-run home run, and Jay County graduate Mitch Waters had four hits on the day.

Korey Heppeard got the win, striking out six batters and allowing just one run on two hits in four innings.

JCHS graduate Pete Byrum teamed with Jimmy Linder to throw the game-two shutout. Byrum tossed four innings of two-hit ball, and Linder allowed one hit in the final three frames.

Adam Childs had a couple of hits in the contest as the Rockets improved to 4-0.[[In-content Ad]]
