Call it a dead heat, for now.
The Geneva Cardinals pulled even in their season series against the Portland Rockets Tuesday, beating the host team 8-5 at Runkle-Miller Field at Portland Memorial Park. The teams are not scheduled to meet again during the regular season, but could break the tie in the Midwest Prospects League tournament at the end of the month.
Geneva (13-18) took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, and the Rockets responded with two in the bottom of the frame to pull within 5-4. Portland (9-15) went ahead with two runs in the eighth, only to have the Cardinals score four times in the top of the ninth for the win.
Mitch Waters, a 2002 Jay County High School graduate, suffered the loss, giving up four runs on three hits in 12/3 innings. Josh Atkinson (JCHS - 2006) started the game and allowed five runs on only four hits in seven innings.
Andrew Evans paced the Rocket offense at 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Waters was also 2-for-4 in the defeat.
