GENEVA - The Geneva Cardinals turned in their first winning season thanks to a sweep of a double-header against the Kokomo Braves Aug. 5.

Geneva dominated the opening game 10-1, and pulled off a 2-1 victory in game two. The victories pushed the Cardinals' final record to 16-14.

Matt Perkins shut down Kokomo in the opener to earn the victory. The win was highlighted on the offensive side by a home run from Colin Zeigel.

The Cardinals won game two in dramatic fashion with Danner Partridge knocking a single to start the rally. Geneva manager Victory Canales by capping his playing career with a double off the fence to move Partridge to third. Joe Ottenweiler then knocked a ground ball to bring in Partridge with the game-winning run.

Golfers win gold

The Jay County Special Olympics golf team sent several competitors to the Indiana regional tournament in July, coming home with a pair of medals.

The unified team of Mike Hickerson and Mark Knipp finished in first place among the 52 teams from 15 counties to earn themselves a gold medal. The duo of Chris LeMaster and Darrin Martin earned a bronze medal for their third-place finish.

Both teams earned a spot in the Aug. 19 state tournament in Indianapolis.[[In-content Ad]]
