Carpenter builds Patriot victory with four goals (08/29/03)

Local Roundup

If Delta wasn’t familiar with Kyle Carpenter before, it sure is now.

The ultimate goal for any soccer or hockey player is a hat trick. Carpenter even surpassed that Thursday, scoring all of the Jay County boys soccer team’s goals in a 4-2 victory over the Delta Eagles.

Delta’s Tyler Wright scored just eight minutes into the game on a breakaway, but it was all Carpenter from there.

He tied the game with six minutes to play in the first half, deflecting a Dave Johnston corner kick into the net with his chest. Less that five minutes later the Patriots were awarded a direct kick, and Carpenter converted again.

He added two more goals after the intermission, one on a Chad Keen assist and the other with a header after another corner kick by Johnston. Wright scored once in the second half for the final margin.

Jay County (2-1) had 40 shots in the contest — 12 by Carpenter — compared to 17 for Delta. Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman and Keen each added five shots.

Trent Bailey saved nine of the Eagles’ 11 shots on goal.

The Patriots’ next test will come Tuesday when they visit Olympic Athletic Conference rival Connersville at 5 p.m.

Star spikers fall

The struggles for the South Adams volleyball team continued Thursday as it dropped a 21-13, 21-9, 21-10 decision to the Heritage Patriots.

Senior Kelly Mertz again paced the team with five kills. She also added 14 digs.

Robin Habegger was next with seven digs, and she had one ace. Alyssa Miller notched seven assists, Brooke Fox had a block and Renee Neuenschwander served one ace.

The Starfires’ junior varsity team took a 21-11, 24-22 defeat, and the freshman squad lost 21-13, 21-19.

South Adams will play its first home match of the season Tuesday when it hosts Adams Central at 6 p.m.

Jay tennis tops NE

Domination at the three singles positions gave Jay County a 3-2 win over the Northeastern Knights.

Coming off a great match and a difficult loss against Union City’s Josh Lea Tuesday, Derek Powell didn’t give his opponent a chance at No. 2 singles. The senior crushed Ben Alyea 6-1, 6-1 to improve his season record to 3-4.

Kurtis Hess continued his success with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Aaron Rokosz. The victory moved him to 6-1 on the year and 24-3 in his varsity career.

Randy Evans completed the singles sweep at the No. 3 spot, defeating Matt Thurston 6-2, 6-1.

Matthew Peterson and Tyler Rigby lost a close match to Andrew Hedge and Eric Davis 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles. Chip Feazell and Adam Paxson took a 6-2, 7-5 defeat against Steve Wilson and Lukas Frame.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also improved to 3-1 with a 3-2 win over the Knights.

Wil Goodrich and Jeff Sims each pulled out difficult singles victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots respectively. Goodrich topped Bo Gard 8-6, and Sims defeated Jacob Frame 9-7.

The third win came at No. 1 doubles with Adam Arnold and Chad Miller getting by Mike McClure and John Sheehan 8-4.

Jason Crouch lost to Ross Alexander 8-2 at No. 2 singles, and James Heare and Todd McCowan fell to Aaron Johnson and B.J. Brown 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

The Patriots open their stretch of hosting four conference matches in six days when they play Connersville and Huntington North Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

No. 13 Devils top JC golfers

One of the toughest courses in the state was quite a challenge for both teams Thursday.

The No. 13 Richmond Red Devils defeated Jay County’s girls golf team Thursday 235-279 at Forest Hills Country Club. The course — loaded with hills, trees and streams — is rated as the fourth hardest in Indiana.

Cara Geesaman was the top Patriot scorer with a 62. She finished behind Richmond’s Kate Koditer, who had the best score of the evening with a 55.

Geesaman was followed by Deanna Drinkut and Katey Kohler, who each shot a 72. Brianne Morrical finished the varsity scoring with a 73, and Angie Stultz shot a 75.

Jay County will play Winchester and Randolph Southern at Winchester Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.
