'Cats defeat Jay tankers (01/17/07)

Swimming roundup

MUNCIE - The divers kick-started the Patriots Tuesday, but it was too little, too late.

Jay County went winless in the first eight events at Muncie Central before April Acker and Steven Kelly each turned in diving victories. The Patriot swimmers followed with six more wins, but the girls team lost 101-85 and the boys fell 110-76.

Acker and Kelly both just missed 50-point wins. Acker posted a career-best 187.05 to win the girls event ahead of Kayla Templin (138.10), and Kelly cleared the 200-point barrier at 200.9 with teammate Donny McCowan (153.55) in second.

Cori Vormohr was in on three of the other four Patriot wins, taking the 100-yard butterfly in 1-minute, 2.98 seconds and the 100 breaststroke at 1:12.90. She also teamed with Tina Gingrasso, Briann Saxman and Michelle Landfair to take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:56.19.

Ashley Horn added a career-best time of 6:30.34 to take the 500 freestyle.

Aaron Hudson had the lone individual swimming win for the Jay County boys, edging Derek Richard by less than one second with a time of 1:08.39 in the 100 breaststroke.

Chance Milligan, Scott Walker, Tom McCord and Sam Miller teamed to finish the 400 freestyle relay with a first-place time of 3:40.94.

Stars lose to HN

BERNE - Alex Habegger and Justin Klopp each turned in a pair of victories, but they were almost all the Starfire swim teams had Tuesday in a couple of losses to Huntington North.

The South Adams girls lost 101-69 to the Vikings, and the boys took a 116-53 defeat.

Habegger, a freshman, eked out a tight win in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking first place by less than a second in 1-minute, 7.13 seconds. He also won the 100 butterfly at 1:00.63.

Klopp finished within a second of the state-qualifying standard in the 50 freestyle, winning in 22.77. He also posted a time of 57.49 to earn the victory in the 100 backstroke.

Senior Channing Yoder turned in the only win for the girls team, taking the 100 breaststroke at 1:21.49. She also had a second-place finish, as did Jessica Sharp, Allison Beitler and Deserae Kirchhofer.[[In-content Ad]]
