Central knocks off Patriot swimmers (01/16/08)

JCHS swimming

When in doubt, just assume the record belongs to Cori Vormohr.

The Jay County High School junior added yet another school record to her resume Tuesday as the Patriot swim teams lost to the visiting Muncie Central Bearcats. Both meets were close, with the girls falling 163-152 and the boys 165-146.

After becoming the first female swimmer in JCHS history to break the 1-minute mark in a stroke event Saturday - she finished the 100-yard butterfly in 59:58 to break her own school record - Vormohr turned in yet another spectacular effort against the Bearcats. Moving away from her specialty events, she won the 200 freestyle by more than 16 seconds and broke a 25-year-old school record.

Her time of 2:02.39 erased the previous mark of 2:02.66 set by Elizabeth Husmann.

Vormohr now holds school records in five of the eight individual events. The only marks left for her to chase are the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, each of which are held by 2002 graduate Abby Arnold.

In addition to her record-breaking effort, Vormohr also cruised in the 100 butterfly, winning by nearly seven seconds in 1:02.82. She led Jay County's only victorious relay, teaming with Aly Miller, Michelle Landfair and Briann Saxman for first in the 200 medley in a season-best 1:51.12.

Sam Miller, who also set a school record Saturday, was the only other double winner for the Patriots. He led the boys team with victories in consecutive events - the 50 freestyle in 22.44 and the 100 butterfly at 54.43.

Jay County took the top three positions in both boys and girls diving.

Olympic Athletic Conference champion Steven Kelly narrowly missed the 200-point plateau, winning the boys event with 199.85 points. Donny McCowan (181.6) and Michael Shrout (170.3) followed him in second and third respectively.

Nadlie Runyon picked up the girls win with a career-high total of 182.05. April Acker was second at 176.05, and Megan Taylor (147.75) placed third.

Aly Miller broke her career-best time by four seconds, winning the girls 500 freestyle in 6:04.49. Tom McCord took the 200 freestlye for the JCHS boys in 1:54.5.[[In-content Ad]]
