Jay County’s girls couldn’t have come much closer.

The Patriot girls swim team dropped to 4-7 Tuesday, coming up on the short end of a 94-92 score against the Muncie Central Bearcats. Jay County’s boys lost 117-67.

The girls competition was tied at 86 with one event to go, making the 400-yard freestyle relay a winner-take-all. The Bearcats took the victory, leaving Jay County in second and third place in the two-point defeat.

Cori Vormohr scored half of the Patriot victories on the night. She was first in the 200 individual medley in 2-minutes, 26.78 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 56.93 seconds.

Briann Saxman won the 100 butterfly in 1:18.38, and April Acker was first in diving with a career-best total of 160.10 points to lead a diving sweep.

Tom McCord won a pair of events for the boys team, finishing the 200 freestyle in 2:03.86 and the 100 freestyle in 53.82. Todd McCowan led a sweep in diving with 167.5 points.

Stars 4-1 at Tri

STRAUGHN — South Adams’ wrestling team posted a 4-1 record as it capped the regular season at the Tri High Invitational Saturday.

The Starfires defeated Northeastern 44-28, Alexandria 66-15, Centerville 45-33 and the host Titans 46-26. Their only loss of the day came by a 39-24 score to Hamilton Heights.

South Adams, which finished 23-3 overall and 5-2 in the Allen County Athletic Conference, will travel to Garrett Saturday to compete in the ACAC tournament.

Crouch, Conatser win as well

INDIANAPOLIS — A pair of wrestlers who posted winning records in Jay County’s third-place finish at the Indianapolis Cathedral Super Duals Saturday were inadvertently omitted from Tuesday’s story.

Jason Crouch finished 4-1 in the heavyweight division, and Nathan Conatser went 3-1 at 215 pounds.

Delta edges Chiefs

MUNCIE — The East Jay Middle School wrestling team fell just short Tuesday in a 45-42 loss to the Delta Eagles.

Posting victories for the Chiefs were Matt Segraves (80), Zac Somers (90), Heng Hong (100), D.J. Teeple (115), Scott Houston (135), Nick Stephen (145), Spencer Hodge (152) and Jake Boyer (175).[[In-content Ad]]
