JCHS roundup

BLUFFTON — Those back-to-back pars to end the day meant everything.

Trisha Champ finished the sectional meet at Parlor City Country Club with a pair of pars and played the final five holes at just 1-over par to advance to the East Noble regional with a 96. Her effort helped the Jay County girls golf team show just how much it has improved as it finished fifth in the 11-team field with a score of 436.

The Patriots were ninth last season.

Champ got on a roll on the back nine as she birdied the 449-yard, par-5 14th hole. She went on to bogey the next two and then parred the 389-yard, par-4 17th and the 222-yard, par-4 18th to finish her round.

Her score was 12th-best overall, but third among those not on advancing teams just ahead of Julie Helmkamp (98) of Fort Wayne North Side. The top three individuals whose teams did not advance also earned a regional berth.

Champ will play at Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendalville Saturday at 10 a.m.

Senior Shonda Sutton finished her career in grand style, posting the best 18-hole score of her career with a 108. She had a par on the 274-yard, par-4 third hole and also tallied six bogeys.

Senior Brianne Morrical was next for the Patriots as she joined Champ and Sutton in parring the third hole. She added a pair of bogeys in her round.

Alissa McMillan and Katey Kohler each shot 120 to finish the team score.
