Champ completes season at regional (09/27/04)

Jay County roundup

KENDALLVILLE — Trisha Champ’s outstanding freshman season came to an end Saturday.

Champ shot a 92 Saturday at the East Noble girls golf regional at Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville to complete her year. She was 14 strokes off the final qualifying score of 78 by Lina Pasquali of East Noble.

Leo won the event with a score of 317, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger was second at 323 and Warsaw took third with a 337. Warsaw’s Emily Johnson was the medalist with a 71.

Champ started off a little slowly with just one par on the way to a 48 on the front nine, but she rallied on the back. She shot 44 on the back side with a trio of pars, including her best effort on the day at the 104-yard, par-3 12th.

She was in the bunker after her first shot, but hit out of the sand from about 30 feet away to within two feet of the hole. She then tapped in for par.

Scots top Jay boys

ANDERSON — The Jay County boys soccer team slipped back to .500 with a 1-0 loss to the Anderson Highland Scots Saturday.

The game was tied for nearly 60 minutes before Nick May was called for a foul, giving Anderson Highland a free kick. Senior Mike Stewart managed to curve his kick around the Patriots’ wall of defenders and inside the far post at the 21:15 mark of the second half for what would be the winning score.

Stewart took two of his team’s five shots on goal, while Jay County (6-6, 1-1 Olympic Athletic Conference) finished with six in the game. Trent Bailey took all but one of the shots for the Patriots, and Josh Thornburg had the other.

Derek Mills came up with four saves.

The junior varsity game finished in a scoreless tie.

Jay County will finish OAC play today when it visits Muncie Southside at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
