Champ scores 30 in win over Cowan (12/04/03)
WJMS girls basketball
Trish Champ has had a couple of big days for the West Jay eighth grade girls basketball team.
Champ has racked up 49 points in her last two games, including a mammoth 30-point effort to lead her team to a 52-41 win over Cowan Wednesday. The seventh grade team lost 18-8.
The eighth grade Eagles scored as many points in the second quarter (17) as Cowan did in the entire first half to build an 11-point halftime lead. They never trailed again, holding the same 11-point margin at the final buzzer.
Brittany O’Dell followed Champ with 12 points, and Jess Watson added 12 as West Jay improved to 2-0.
The seventh grade team couldn’t get the same kind of offense working, going scoreless in the first half. Chelsea Grady, Brittany Pinkston, Alex Bunch and Jessica Beaty scored two points apiece in the contest.
The teams were also in action Tuesday against Montpelier with the seventh graders scoring a 26-8 win while the eighth grade team picked up a 32-12 victory.
The eighth grade team got another outstanding effort from Champ, who finished with 19 points. Josie Bumbalough and Watson had four points apiece.
The defense came up big for the seventh grade team, allowing just two points in each quarter. Pinkston, Baylea Holdcroft and Beaty each scored six points to lead a balanced offensive attack.[[In-content Ad]]
