Cheer clinic begins Monday (07/15/03)

The Jay County High School cheerleader clinic will begin Monday at Jay County High School.

The clinic will be run by JCHS coach Mindy Weaver, her staff, and the JCHS varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders. It is open to anyone who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade for the upcoming school year.

The clinic will run Monday through Thursday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Registration will begin prior to the first day of camp at 12:15 p.m.

The cost of the clinic is $10. T-shirts and shorts can also be ordered on the first day of camp for an additional $10.

Red Flames rally

The Red Flames scored three times in the final period Saturday to get a 6-5 win over the Gold Niners in the Jay Community Center’s Small-sided Summer Soccer League.

Kaelen Jewell picked up three goals for the Flames. Kaho Saruta scored twice, and Maddie Bailey had one goal.

Zach Fullenkamp accounted for all five scores by the Niners.

The other game in the 7-8-year-old age group resulted in a 1-1 tie between the Blue Thunderbirds and the Purple Smash. Jordan Wolford scored for the Thunderbirds in the second period, and Abbie Alexander forged the tie with a goal in the third quarter.

In the 9-12-year-old age group the Gold Olympians beat the Orange Swift 6-3, and the Red Missiles topped the Gray Storm by the same tally.

Austin Bentz and Derek Bartlett each had three goals for the Olympians. Luke Elliott scored twice for the Swift, and Carlos Esquivel added one goal.

Brad Horn scored four times for the Missiles, and Richard Osterholt punched in two goals. Heather Corle put the ball in the net twice for the Storm.

JR still stumbling

The Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team lost two more games Sunday, falling to 1-13 this season. Jay-Randolph lost the first game to Anderson 8-5, and then fell to New Castle 7-1.

The Bulldogs were never close against Anderson, falling behind 5-1 after three innings.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, but Anderson added two more in the seventh for an 8-2 lead. Jay-Randolph scored twice in the eight and once in the ninth before the comeback try fizzled.

Bryan Dodd and Cory Waldreth each had three hits in the defeat, and Brandon Croyle and Cameron Troxell added two hits apiece. Croyle, Dodd and Troxell each scored once, Dodd drove in two runs, and Waldrath added and RBI.

Jay County’s Chris Myers went 1-for-5 with a run.

James Brannan took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in five innings.

Former Patriot Josh Jellison took the mound against New Castle and had his team in the game. They trailed just 2-1 when he left after five innings, but the Bulldogs didn’t score again as Jellison took the defeat.

New Castle added two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth against Jay-Randolph reliever Kyle Hunt.

Troxell went 3-for-4 and scored the only run for the Bulldogs. Jellison was 0-for-1, and Myers went 1-for-3.

Traveling soccer

There are still roster spots open on the Jay County Soccer Club’s fall traveling soccer teams.

Golf outing

The Portland Country Club Women’s Association will hold it’s Rally for a Cure golf outing next month.
