Chief 7th graders rally in second half (12/10/04)

PORTLAND — East Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team didn’t want to dip below .500. So, it overcame a large halftime deficit for a 46-43 victory over the Bluffton Tigers Thursday. The eighth grade team remained perfect with a 49-34 win.

The Chief seventh graders (3-2) trailed by 13 points at the half, but scored 36 after the break to pull out the comeback win. Eric Homan led the team with 19 points, and Ben Vance added 13.

Adam Garringer led another balanced scoring effort for the eighth grade team (5-0) with nine points. Lance Franklin scored eight points, and Billy Wellman and Phillip Powell each added seven.

SA edges Knights

GENEVA — Heath Moser racked up eight of his team’s 10 fourth-quarter points as the South Adams seventh grade boys basketball team fought off the Norwell Knights Thursday, 32-27. Cody Meshberger posted eight points in the final period for the eighth grade team as its survived with a 32-30 win.

Moser, who finished with 18 points, led the seventh grade team to victory after the lead slipped to just three points at the end of the third quarter. Roman Smith added six points, and Chase Ingle added four.

The Starfire eighth graders led by just one point after three quarters, before Meshberger scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth. Kyle DeArmond led the team with 12 points, eight of which came in the first half, and Christ Stutzman scored four.

WJ 7th drops first

DUNKIRK — The West Jay seventh grade boys basketball team’s season-opening winning streak finally came to an end Thursday with a 36-24 loss to the Southern Wells Raiders. The eighth grade team fell, 44-39.

The seventh grade Eagles won six straight games to open the season, but stumbled in the third quarter against Southern Wells. Nursing a one-point halftime lead, they got outscored 13-3 in the third period and were unable to recover.

Taylor Farmer paced the team with 11 points. Willie Mayfield added eight.

The Raiders took control of the eighth grade game with an 11-6 first quarter. The teams played dead even the rest of the way, each scoring 13, nine and 11 points in the final three periods.

Allen Brown was the lone Eagle in double figures as he finished with 10 points. Brady Mills and Blake Price each had eight points for West Jay (3-4), and Matt Ward added seven.

Cavs topple Fort

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians found their missing offense in the fourth quarter. It was almost enough for a comeback victory, but not quite.

The Fort Recovery seventh grade boys basketball team rallied from a 16-6 deficit, but couldn’t quite finish it off in a 19-17 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers Thursday. The eighth grade squad also fell, 27-15.

The Indian seventh graders scored just two points in each of the first three quarters to fall behind by 10. They came alive in the fourth with 11 points, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Greg Kahlig led the Tribe in the defeat with seven points. Cody Fiely and Josh Wendel each added four.

The eighth grade team went scoreless in the first period. It fell behind 17-5 at the half and could not recover.

Wes Kahlig and Tyler Jutte each finished with five points.[[In-content Ad]]
