Chief girls 3rd at Norwell

EJMS/SAMS cross country

No Chiefs finished in the top 10. However, a group of them crossed the finish line between 11th and 20th to give the East Jay Middle School girls cross country team a third-place finish in Wednesday's Norwell Invitational.

EJMS scored 95 points in the nine-team field to finish behind champion Maple Creek (29) and host Norwell (52). South Adams was last with 219.

Brody Shane of South Adams won the boys race as his team placed fifth with 313. East Jay was sixth at 148 while Carroll won with 38 points.

Abigail Johnson turned in the top effort for the East Jay girls. She finished just one second short of the top 10 in 11th place at 12 minutes, 57 seconds.

It took less than 30 seconds for the next three Chiefs to complete the race as Amber Huelskamp placed 16th in 13:20. Emi Minnich and Megan Wellman each posted times of 13:22 to take 19th and 20th respectively.

Alex Loy capped the EJMS team score in 29th at 13:54.

Shane was the star of the boys race, outrunning the field by 31 seconds to win in 10:20. The No. 2 runner for South Adams was Ryan Ford in 11:52 for 17th place.

Daniel Velasco finished 20th in 12:15 ahead of Chance Sprunger (41st - 13:13) and Cole Litwiller (52nd - 13:49).

Zane Shreve was the only East Jay boy to crack the top 25, placing fifth in 11:10. Chaz Carroll was 30th as he finished in 12:39.

Others who scored for the Chiefs were Jalen Ryder (34th - 12:56), Nicholas Leuthold (35th - 12:57) and Tyler Wendel (44th - 13:24).

Allison Amstutz set the pace for the South Adams girls with a time of 13:52 for 28th place. Erika Miller was 38th in 14:53 followed by Katelin Hawbaker (48th - 15:27), Aleesha Goodwin (52nd - 16:07) and Lily Shane (56th - 16:52).

Top runners in the reserve race for East Jay were Lillian McClung (20th - 15:21) for the girls and Matthew Cox (27th - 14:03) for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
