DUNKIRK — East Jay’s girls closed out their season in style Monday, defeating Delta, West Jay and Wes-Del in their final cross country meet of the year.

The Chief girls placed five runners in the top six at Dunkirk City Park to finish with a winning score of 19. Delta was second with 43, and West Jay took third with 82.

Delta won the eighth grade boys competition 25-35 over East Jay. Delta also won the sixth and seventh grade boys race with 21 points. East Jay was next with 50, and Wes-Del scored 67.

West Jay did not have enough runners for a team score in either boys race.

Leah Wellman powered the victory for the East Jay girls, finishing first in 12-minutes, 49 seconds. Delta came in second place, but the Chiefs followed in third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

Katie Butcher took the second spot for East Jay, finishing third overall in 13:07. Katie Simmons was fourth in 13:16 followed by Lindsay Moser in 13:17 and LeAnn Horn in 13:22.

Kristen Selvey topped the charts for West Jay in 12th at 14:05. Macey Gerber was next in 24th in 14:36.

Completing the team score for West Jay were Elise Jetmore (28th - 15:02), Carley Weaver (31st - 15:27) and Shannon Springer (35th - 16:28).

Tevan Nichols and Patrick Johnson of East Jay dominated the eighth grade boys race in first and second, but Delta took six of the next seven places to swipe the victory.

Nichols was first overall in 11:09, and Johnson followed in 11:20. West Jay’s Jeremiah Cotherman, the Eagles’ lone runner, was the only one to break Delta’s hold on the next seven places as he took sixth in 12:16.

Brad Horn was 10th for East Jay in 12:31, Ben Walter finished 12th in 12:47 and Ben Brandt took 14th in 13:40.

Brad Leuthold topped the charts for the East Jay boys in the sixth and seventh grade race, finishing third in 11:53. Garrett Krieg joined him in the top 10 as he took eighth in 12:16.

Ed Muhlenkamp finished 12th in 13:00, Seth Ainsworth was 13th in 13:14 and Jake Heitkamp placed 15th in 13:25.

Chance Fuller led West Jay in 22nd with a time of 14:06. He was followed by: Wesley Price (33rd - 15:29), Trey Auker (36th - 16:03) and Zach Johnson (38th - 16:18).

East Jay 11th at state

NOBLESVILLE — East Jay’s teams also competed at the Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championships at Noblesville Saturday, with both the boys and girls squads finishing in 11th place.

Tevan Nichols was the top Chief runner from eighth team, placing 29th out of 167 runners in the boys race with a time of 11:01. Patrick Johnson was 34th in 11:08.

Also among the top five for East Jay were: Brad Horn (89th - 12:05), Ben Walter (102nd - 12:15) and Garrett Krieg (109th - 12:24).

Katie Simmons topped the list for the Chief girls as she finished 45th out of 178 with a time of 12:39. Leah Wellman was next in 53rd at 12:48.

They were followed by: LeAnn Horn (63rd - 12:57), Lindsay Moser (66th - 13:00) and Katie Butcher (78th - 13:13).

Ranae Ray placed first for East Jay in the girls reserve race, finishing 14th with a time of 13:12. Ed Muhlenkamp was 37th in the boys race in 12:24.[[In-content Ad]]
