WINCHESTER — An undefeated season is coming closer and closer to reality for the East Jay eighth grade football team.

The Chiefs won their seventh consecutive game Thursday, improving to 7-0 with a 34-0 destruction of Winchester Driver. They have just two more games to play — at home against Hartford City and at Delta.

The seventh grade team also topped Driver, 20-8, to pull even at 3-3 on the season.

Billy Wellman led the eighth graders, scoring three of their touchdowns and passing for another. He reached the end zone on runs of three, five and 10 yards.

The quarterback also tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Cole Ingram.

Lance Franklin had the other Chief score, running for a 40-yard touchdown. Adam Garringer added a couple of two-point conversion runs. David Jones, Lance Franklin and Adam Gray were each in on fumble recoveries, and Trey Dunn added an interception.

The seventh grade team got on the board first on a 23-yard run by Nick Stephen in the first quarter. The play was set up by a Ben Walter fumble recovery on the first play of the game.

Ben Vance tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Scott Houston in the second quarter, and Stephen added an 18-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Adam Coats ran in the two-point conversion after Houston’s touchdown.
