HARTFORD CITY — East Jay’s football teams took a split result as they battled Hartford City Thursday. The eighth grade Chiefs won 18-8 while the seventh graders suffered a 38-0 defeat.
The East Jay eighth graders trailed 8-6 after a Hartford City touchdown with 2:45 to go in the first quarter, but they came right back. Ben Vance scored on a 39-yard screen pass from Alex Langenkamp with 28 seconds remaining in the first half as the Chiefs reclaimed the lead.
The defense held Hartford City scoreless the rest of the way, and East Jay added a score on a 6-yard run by Adam Coats in the closing minutes.
Vance finished with 69 yards on 12 carries, and also caught all three of Langenkamp’s successful passes for 69 yards. Colton Prescott had nine tackles, and Tyler Freyburger and Nick Stephen each added seven.
East Jay’s seventh grade team failed to get in the end zone while Hartford City scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, one in the second and two more in the third. Brandon Haffner carried the ball 13 times for 107 yards for the Chiefs, and Stetson Petro had eight tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
