Chiefs top Wilson to finish perfect season (02/13/04)

Mission accomplished.

The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team finished what it set out to do, completing a perfect season with a 37-28 victory over Muncie Wilson Thursday.

The seventh grade squad picked up a 42-36 win.

East Jay’s eighth graders trailed by three at the half and 22-20 after three quarters, but were not about to let the winning streak end. They outscored Wilson 17-6 in the fourth quarter for the win.

The Chiefs finished the year at 14-0.

Cassandra Huelskamp scored 11 points to lead East Jay. She also had four rebounds.

Abby Loy had nine points and three boards, and Shelby Rines had a team-high six rebounds to go along with four points.

Katie Runyon had six points, Sharon Dirksen had five and Dana Horn and Lauren Edmundson each added two.

East Jay’s seventh graders fell behind at halftime, but rallied back for the win.

Gina Muhlenkamp scored 12 points, and Kaelee Keller added 10. Mackenzie Loy and Brittany Mann scored six points apiece.

Jay finishes fifth

The Jay County middle school boys swim team placed fifth at the nine-team Norwell Invitational Saturday with 170.5 points.

Jay County had by far its best finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, where they took two of the top three spots.

Lance VanSkyock took second place in the event with a time of 1-minute, 28.29 seconds. Trey Dunn was just behind in third in 1:32.40.

Ryan Sutton added a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly in 33.23, and Steven Kelly, Chance Milligan, VanSkyock and Dunn teamed to take fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:12.93.

Patriots freshmen win

Jay County’s freshman basketball team improved to 12-5 Wednesday with a 38-35 overtime victory over Anderson.

Rhett Retter scored 11 points to lead the Patriots. John Wenger also reached double figures with 10 points.

Hunter safety

A hunter safety class will be held March 12-13 at the Jay County Conservation Club in Jefferson Township.

There is no cost for the class, which will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 12, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 13. Lunch will be provided on March 13.

Participants must attend both sessions, and anyone born after Dec. 31, 1986 must successfully complete the class to obtain a hunting license in Indiana.

Areas covered in the class include shotguns, rifles, handguns, archery, muzzleloaders, hunter ethics and survival skills.
