Chiefs, Tribe split (12/14/04)

Junior High roundup

FORT RECOVERY — Both sides of the state line got something to smile about Monday.

The East Jay Chiefs boys eighth grade team stayed perfect on the year, topping the Fort Recovery Indians 43-32. Fort Recovery’s seventh grade team fought off a late rally by the Chiefs to hold on for a 32-28 victory.

The East Jay eighth graders (6-0) trailed by two at halftime, but did more than enough to erase that deficit in the third quarter. They put up 21 points in the period, compared to seven for the Indians, to pull away.

Billy Wellman paced the Chiefs with nine points, and Dexter Shreve added eight. Phillip Powell had six points, and Cole Ingram and Adam Garringer each posted five.

Wes Kahlig scored more than half of the points for Fort Recovery (1-3), finishing with 17. Frank Thien and Toby Metzger each added five.

The Indian seventh graders (3-1) grabbed a 10-2 lead in the first quarter, and increased the advantage to 12 points at halftime. East Jay outscored the Tribe 10-3 in the fourth quarter, but it was not quite enough to force overtime.

Josh Wendel led the Fort Recovery scoring attack with 11 points. Greg Kahlig added 10 points.

Eric Homan carried the Chiefs (3-3) with 12 points. Tyler Freyburger added four points.

Leo smashes Stars

LEO — The Leo Lions’ roar silenced the South Adams junior high boys basketball teams Monday. The eighth grade team dropped 48-20, and the seventh graders suffered a 54-22 defeat.

The Leo teams combined to score in double digits in seven out of eight quarters. The Starfires never surpassed eight points in a quarter, and were facing double-digit deficits at halftime of both games.

Kyle DeArmond and Cody Meshberger paced the South Adams eighth graders with six points apiece. Chris Stutzman added four points.

Roman Smith was the high man for the seventh grade team, scoring all of his six points in the third quarter. Nick Teeter and Heath Moser each added five points.

Chiefs drop Coldwater

PORTLAND — East Jay’s seventh grade girls basketball team kept its streak going Monday night. The eighth graders won back-to-back games for the first time this year.

The Chief seventh grade team rolled to a 27-13 win over the Coldwater Cavaliers, and the eighth grade team won 37-26.

Lindsey Wellman paced the East Jay seventh graders (4-0) with 16 points as they dominated the first half for a 17-2 lead. Pazia Speed added seven points.

Kaelee Keller scored 13 points for the eighth grade team, which has now posted a pair of wins after losing its first two games of the season. Gina Muhlenkamp also reached double figures with 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
