Chiefs win both against Montpelier (09/12/07)

East Jay's volleyball teams each rolled to victories Tuesday over Montpelier.

The seventh grade Chiefs stayed perfect on the year with a 25-13, 25-15 win, and the eighth graders improved to 3-1 by a 25-12, 25-16 tally.

Mikayla Wellman's serving tortured Montpelier as she racked up 11 points, including eight aces, for the East Jay seventh graders (4-0). Hannah Ainsworth added seven points and five assists, and Rachelle Jackson had two digs.

Alyssa Rigby and Megan May each scored eight points for the Chief eighth grade team. Kassi Hemmelgarn had four assists, and Mariah Hornaday notched three kills.

Driver downs Eagles

Chance Fuller turned in a runner-up finish for West Jay's boys cross country team, but the squad fell 23-38 to Winchester Driver.

The Eagle girls do not have enough runners for a team score.

Fuller paced West Jay as he finished second in 12-minutes, 47 seconds, and Kyle Selvey was five seconds back in third with a time of 12:52. Dillon Friddle took 11th in 14:14 followed by Lee Mock (14th - 14:39) and Zac Johnson (16th - 15:24).

Liz Lennartz and Miranda Gerber went back-to-back in fourth and fifth for the West Jay girls with times of 14:13 and 14:21 respectively. Megan Price was eighth in 15:32, and Cierra Nichols finished 10th in 16:05.

Tribe tops Versailles

FORT RECOVERY - Fort Recovery scored a pair of volleyball wins over the Versailles Tigers Tuesday as the eighth grade Indians won 18-25, 25-21, 25-17 and the seventh graders took a 25-17, 25-19 victory.

Kara Faller racked up 12 points, 10 of which came on aces, and also notched seven kills and three blocks for the eighth grade team (2-3). Kylie Kahlig added eight points and eight kills, Mikayla Westgerdes had eight points and Olivia Schwieterman totaled 10 assists.

The Indian seventh graders (3-3) got six points and two kills from Chelsea Pottkotter. Emily Link and Amy Link each scored five points, and Janelle Schwieterman put up two assists.

MS gridders roll

BERNE - The South Adams seventh and eighth grade football teams each crushed the visiting Heritage Patriots Tuesday. The SAHS seventh graders won 20-0, and the eighth grade squad took a 34-0 victory.

Marcus Rich, who racked up 99 rushing yards on just nine carries, and Nick Batt each scored a pair of touchdowns for the eighth grade team. Scott Hoeppner had the other TD, and Batt led the defense with nine tackles.

Corey Seffernick ran for the seventh graders' first touchdown, then tossed 14 yards to Cody Wickey for the second. Blake Fox also had a TD run in the fourth quarter, and Cassidy Huntley finished with seven tackles.

Chiefs edge WJ

East Jay won a hard-fought battle Tuesday against its county counterpart, rallying after a game-one loss to top West Jay 17-25, 25-24, 15-11 in sixth grade volleyball.

Kaitlin Petro paced the Chiefs in the victory with eight points. Katie Aker scored seven points, and Rachelle Boolman added six.

Chelsea Tighe had nine points, including five in the opening game, for West Jay. Mikayla Martin scored seven points, and Ashley Motter added six.[[In-content Ad]]
