Kirk Comer is ready to go to work.

Hired Monday night by the Jay School Board as the new varsity girls basketball coach, Comer is having a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the JCHS commons for anyone interested in the program.

“We’ve got a great nucleus there, a super eighth grade class coming in, and a JV team that had only two losses, I believe,” Comer said after the school board meeting. “Expectations are high.”

Comer succeeds seven-year coach Lea Selvey, who was unceremoniously dumped by the board in April. The handling of the Selvey decision prompted board member Ted Champ to cast the lone vote against hiring Comer on Monday.

“Mr. Comer knows this is not personal,” Champ said. “I consider him a friend....I’m going to vote against it just because of the way (the Selvey decision) was handled.”

Comer, a resident of Portland, has been girls varsity coach at Union City since 1999. While there, he racked up four sectional championships and took his team once to the semi-state.

His 2001-02 team posted a 23-2 season record, the best in the school’s history.

“I was very happy where I was,” Comer said. “The only job I would have ever left there for was this job here.”

A sales representative for Kessler’s Team Sports, he also manages the Kessler’s Team Sports store in Portland with his wife Chris. “My kids go to school here,” he said, referring to his four sons. “This is home to us.”

Comer said he’ll stress an up-tempo game for the Patriots.

“I like to go up and down the floor,” he said. “Everything starts with our defense. We switch up a lot on the defensive end and try to confuse our opponents. ...We’ll just have to work on this this summer with the girls and see how they adapt to that system.”

A 1983 graduate of Winchester, Comer attended Ball State University for one and a half years.

Prior to his stint at Union City, he was the girls basketball coach at Union from 1994 to 1999 and at Daleville from 1992 to 1994. While at Union, he was named Mid-Eastern Conference Coach of the Year two years in a row. While at Union City, he was tapped by the Richmond Palladium-Item as its Coach of the Year in 2000-2001.

His coaching experience also includes a year as JCHS softball coach (1995-1996) and a year as an assistant football coach at Winchester (1992-1993).

“There’s a lot of possibilities here for the girls basketball program,” Comer said. “Jay County girls basketball has a rich tradition. I’m just fortunate to be part of that now....This is home. It’s time to come home.”[[In-content Ad]]
