Cope breaks record again

For the third time this season, Dylan Cope set a new school record.
The 2013 Jay County High School graduate broke his own Indiana University East record again Saturday at the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University.
Cope ran to a 29th-place finish against a field made up of mostly NCAA Division I competitors. He posted a time of 4 minutes, 11.39 seconds.
His time surpassed the record of 4:11.86 he set April 12 at the Indiana Little State Championships.
The record prior to this season was 4:34.
Fort baseball ranked 2nd
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery High School baseball team is having a special season.
The Ohio coaches agree.
Fort Recovery moved up to No. 2 in the Division IV Week 3 Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Poll, improving two spots from last week’s No. 4 ranking.
The Indians (14-3, 2-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) earned 161 poll points.
They received six votes for second place, eight votes for third place and three votes each for fourth and fifth place.
Seneca East (16-1) holds the top spot with 209 points and 16 first-place votes.
Hiland comes in at No. 3, ahead of Lehman Catholic, and Tinora round out the top five.
Newark Catholic, Cincinnati Country Day, Trimble, Patrick Henry and North Central are ranked six through 10.

Tribe loses in extras
MINSTER — The Tribe held Minster scoreless for seven innings on Monday.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Minster Wildcats broke a scoreless tie to earn a 1-0 victory over Fort Recovery.
The Indians (14-3, 2-2 MAC) got a strong pitching performance from starter Kent Retz, who allowed four hits while striking out five and walkig four in 6 1/3 innings. He gave way to Jackson Hobbs in the seventh, who gave up the only run of the game to take the loss.
Elijah Kahlig had a double to lead a four-hit effort by the Indians. Blake Boughman, Jacob Muhlenkamp and Hobbs each had a base hit. Hobbs also walked twice, and Muhlenkamp and Mitchel Stammen both had one free pass.
Muhlenkamp now has 87 career hits. He is third in school history and sits just 10 shy of the school record held by Bob Heitkamp. Stammen, who had a stolen base against the Wildcats, moved into third in program history for stolen bases in a season. He is tied with Dale Griesinger, who also holds the record of 25.
 
Starfires blank Union City
UNION CITY — The South Adams girls tennis team made easy work of Union City on Wednesday, defeating the Indians 5-0.z
The Starfires (9-4, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) won four matches in straight sets and earned a forfeit in another.
Sophmore No. 1 singles player Brittany Potts only dropped one game in her 6-1, 6-0 win over Ali Hunt. Union City’s Kiana Cleere gave junior Maddie Graber a tough time in the first set at No. 2 singles before losing 6-4, 6-0.
Sophomores Kylea Pierce and Riley Liechty beat Christy Mote and Tiffany Reagan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The No 2 doubles team of senior Ericka Miller and freshman Kara Seffernick beat Katie Rismiller and Susy Hatton 6-0, 6-2.
Maddy Kloepper won by forfeit at No. 3 singles.

Grimm leads in loss
GARRETT — Keirstyn Grimm had two hits and drove in a pair, but it wasn’t enough as the South Adams softball team lost Tuesday to the Garrett Railroaders, 8-3.
The Starfires led 3-1 after 2 ½ innings, but the Railroaders scored three in the third, one in the fourth and tacked on three more in the sixth to get the win.
Alyssa Bluhm, Alaina Johnston, Maddie Morgan, Lauren Smith, Reba Morehouse and Brandy Rogers all had hits for South Adams.
Katelin Augsburger took the loss, giving up five runs — four earned — on nine highs in five innings of work.
