Defending champs overpower Patriots (04/11/07)

Five-time defending sectional champion Marion came to Jay County Tuesday and handed the Patriot girls tennis team a 4-1 defeat.

Carissa Wilkins accounted for the lone JCHS victory, defeating Tamara Barrett 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Wilkins, the team's leader in wins a year ago, is now 2-0.

In other singles matches, Megan Adams fell 6-1, 6-0 to Kristen Futrell at No. 1 and Jenna Valentine dropped 6-0, 6-0 to Amee Patel at No. 2.

Jessica Muhlenkamp and Tiffani Bickel rolled through the first set of their No. 1 doubles match, but couldn't keep the momentum in a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 defeat.

At No. 2 doubles Cindy Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle fell 6-1, 6-1 to Emma Friday and Alex Davis.

Jay County lost the junior varsity competition 7-5, despite an 8-0 shutout by Brittany White and Becky Muhlenkamp over Mollie Kuzora and Sam Dunlop at No. 4 doubles. Other winners for Jay County were Megan McGraw and the teams of Briann Saxman and Megan Huntsman, Brittany Lewis and Betsy Knittle, and Mizuki Saito and Michelle Landfair.

SA track drops first

BERNE - Haleigh Lehman came up with two victories Tuesday, but there wasn't much else to celebrate as the South Adams track teams lost to the Leo Lions. The girls team fell 81-41 while the boys dropped a 96.5-26.5 decision to their Allen County Athletic Conference rivals.

Lehman was the highlight of the evening for the Starfires as she dominated the distance events.

She took first place in the 1,600-meter run at 5-minutes, 41 seconds, and won the 3,200 run in 12:23.

Fellow senior Katie Weaver earned the only other victory for the girls team with a time of 13.5 in the 100 dash.

Josh Cisney picked up the lone victory for the SAHS boys team as he took first in the 110 hurdles in 16.4. The Starfires also had a winning time of 46.99 in the 4x100 relay.

JC JV baseball rolls

Jay County's junior varsity baseball team completed a domination of Muncie Central, winning 10-0 in five innings a day after the varsity squad beat the Bearcats by a 13-0 count.

Trey Dunn led a big offensive day for the Patriots (1-0) as he went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, three runs and three RBIs.

Phil Powell earned the victory, striking out four while allowing one hit in two innings. Michael Daniels turned in two hitless innings of relief, and Eric Homan finished the game with a hitless fifth.

Fort finishes fourth

DELPHOS, Ohio - Both Fort Recovery junior high track teams finished fourth Tuesday at a four-team meet hosted by St. John's.

Holly Brunswick and Kylie Kahlig each had two second-place finishes for the Indian girls, and Aaron Vagedes was second in one event for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
