DeKalb edges Starfires in season opener (11/16/05)

BERNE — Without an individual victory the South Adams girls swim team couldn’t pull off the team win either. The Starfires fell just short in their first dual meet of the season Tuesday, losing 87-83 to the visiting DeKalb Barons.
The only victory for South Adams came in the 200-yard freestyle relay where Channing Yoder, Megan Myers, Margaret Beymer and Talitha Maven teamed for a time of 1-minute, 57.90 seconds. The Starfires also took second-place in the event, but it was not enough to overcome losses in all eight individual events.
Jessica Sharp had the best individual effort for South Adams, finishing second twice. She was the runner up by just 27 hundredths of a second in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.94, and took second in the 500 freestyle in 6:13.88.
Also placing second were Yoder in the 100 breaststroke, Beymer in the 100 freestyle, Courtney Hewitt in the 100 backstroke and Holly Yoder in the 100 butterfly.
JC bowlers dominate
BLUFFTON — The Jay County High Rollers bowling team went unchallenged in their first match of the season, crushing Southern Wells 20-0. Jay County cruised by a 956-778 score in the opening game, and stayed in control with an 866-665 win in the second.
Andy Hughes was one of three bowlers to score two points on the night. He finished with the top game and series with scores of 217 and 409 respectively.
Also scoring two points apiece were Cory Mock and Tom McCowan. Adding single points were Cody Scott, Chris Elmore, Ryan Mescher and Evan Eley.
Chiefs start with Ws
East Jay’s boys basketball teams each began their 2005-06 campaigns with victories Tuesday. The eighth grade squad nearly doubled up the Adams Central Jets, 43-22, while the seventh grade team eked out a 33-31 victory.
Eric Homan paced the eighth graders with 10 points. Austin Emerick followed with nine points, and Ben Vance added eight.
Aaron Emerick had the team high for the seventh graders with 10 points. Garrett Krieg scored nine points, and Drew Houck notched eight.
West Jay splits in opener
GENEVA — West Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team got off to a good start Tuesday with a 38-29 victory over the South Adams Starfires. South Adams took the seventh grade contest, edging the visiting Eagles 32-30.
Josh Beaty was the lone eighth grader in double figures as he scored 12 points. John Pettus added eight points.
Nick Teeter was the top Starfires scorer with 15 points.
Zach Cash and Ryan Miskinis each reached double figures for the West Jay seventh graders with 13 and 11 points respectively.
