The Patriots won more events than they had at any meet all year. And yet they still suffered another heart-breaking defeat.

Jay County's boys swim team fell just short, dropping to 1-5 with a 154-150 Wednesday loss to the visiting Delta Eagles.

It was the team's third loss of 10 or fewer points, following a 95-90 defeat at Bluffton and a 157-147 loss to Norwell. Its lone win was the closest of all the meets this year, coming by a 150-149 final over Anderson Highland.

Jay County's girls (5-4) suffered a similar fate, needing to take first and third in the final relay to forge a tie. But the Eagles won the 400 freestyle relay and topped the Patriots 159-146.

Matt Eldridge led the Jay County boys, picking up one of its four individual wins and contributing to both relay victories. Cori Vormohr and April Acker turned in the only victories for the girls team.

Eldridge earned his individual win easily in the 100-yard butterfly. He finished nearly seven seconds ahead of Delta's Matt Morris in 1-minute, 6.44 seconds.

He also teamed with Tom McCord, Aaron Hudson and Andres Ayesta to take first place in the 200 medley relay in 1:55.25, and McCord, Lance VanSkyock and Chance Milligan for a time of 3:57.95 to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Todd McCowan triumphed in a close diving competition in which the top three divers were separated by less than three-quarters of a point. He was first in 173.25 with Delta's Tony Christman (172.9) second and teammate Steven Kelly (172.60) third .

Milligan picked up an individual win in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 58.65. Hudson was first with a time of 1:10.85 in the 100 breaststroke.

Vormohr was the lone Patriot to earn two victories on the evening, winning by wide margins in both of her events. She took the 200 individual medley by nearly 12 seconds in 2:20.36 and the 100 breaststroke by just under four seconds at 1:11.34.

April Acker added the only other first-place finish for the girls team, putting up a score of 159.7. Tricia Skiver was second with 146.7.[[In-content Ad]]
