Depth carries JC golfers (05/25/05)

Jay County roundup

PORTLAND — The Union City Indians had the best individual score, but they needed more than that to beat the Patriots.

Jay County’s boys golf team used its depth to extend its winning streak Tuesday, getting six rounds of 42 or better to score a 160. Union City stayed close and finished with a 167, and Randolph Southern shot 188 at the three-team meet at Portland Golf Club.

Union City’s Taylor Jenkinson was the match medalist with a 37, and Carson Jenkinson had a 39. However, the Indians needed four scores, not two, to overcome the Patriots.

The top two Jay County players — Tyler Johnston and Alex Hunt — held their spots, each matching Carson Jenkinson at 39. Ben Freeman and Josh Thornburg finished the team score with match 41s, while Union City’s third and fourth scores were 43 and 48.

Also, the Patriots got a 42 from Nathan McClung and a 43 from Adam Foster.

Baseball clobbers Bears

PORTLAND — Jay County’s baseball team put together solid pitching and hitting Tuesday night. If it can get the defense going they’ll be ready for next week’s sectional tournament.

The Patriots racked up 14 hits and finished off the Monroe Central Golden Bears 15-5 in five innings as senior Trent Bailey tossed a three-hitter.

Jay County (10-12) posted seven first-inning runs and added four more in the second to take command as 10 different players had a hit in the contest. Corey Locke had two hits and two RBIs, Chris Elmore notched two hits and one RBI and Bailey also had two hits.

Bailey struck out six batters in five innings in the Senior Night victory. All of the five runs against him were unearned as the Patriots committed five errors.

Girls track ends year

INDIANAPOLIS — The girls track season came to an end for the Jay County Patriots Tuesday as no one was able to advance from the Lawrence North regional meet. The top three finishers in each event earned a berth in the state meet.

The Patriots’ top effort came from the 4x800-meter relay team of Amanda Johnson, Jessica Mosier, Alyssa Johnson and Jill Roughia. They finished sixth with a time of 10-minutes, 19.5 seconds, scoring the team’s lone three points for the 24th-place total.

Sisters Alyssa and Amanda Johnson, both of whom won sectional titles last week, each earned a ninth-place finish. Alyssa came with a time of 12:16.39 in the 3,200 run, and Amanda’s was in the 400 dash in 1:02.25.

Jill Roughia was 10th in the 800 run in 2:23.09. Sarah Mescher was 13th in both the 100 dash (13.91 seconds) and the 200 dash (28.79). Erika Hunt placed 16th in the high jump at four feet, six inches.[[In-content Ad]]
