PORTLAND — Monday night’s track meet came down to relays and depth.
South Adams took seven of 12 individual girls events, but Jay County grabbed a 64-59 victory by winning a pair of relays and earning two of the top three spots eight times. The Starfire boys used almost the same formula for victory as they split the 12 individual wins with the Patriots but grabbed two relay wins and placed two of the top three eight times to win by a 68-54 final.
“We talked in the locker room before coming out here that if we took second or third in every race and won every relay that we’d win the meet by a very small margin,” said JCHS girls coach Tyler Caldwell “... I thought the kids did a great job of coming out and executing that.”
The South Adams boys team got the same type of effort, and also got one-two finishes in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs from seniors Heath Lehman and Michael Lehman.
“I think it was the distance ... and the seconds and the thirds (that carried us),” said Starfire coach Michael Mosser. “I would say our numbers got them, and our distance for sure.”
Jay County’s girls team got individual wins from five different runners while Katie Weaver and Chelsea Minnich combined to earn five of the seven Starfire wins.
Jill Roughia, Alyssa Johnson and Amanda Johnson each won an individual event and teamed with Jessica Mosier for first in the 4x800 relay win in 10-minutes, 52 seconds.
Roughia was first in the 800 run in 2:35.58, with teammate Rose Weaver 10 seconds behind in second place. Alyssa Johnson took the 3,200 run in 12:26.96, and Amanda Johnson won the 400 dash in 1:05.96 ahead of teammate Tequila Guntle.
Freshman Erika Hunt led another big one-two finish for the Patriots in the high jump. She was first at 4 feet, eight inches, and Mosier finished second with the same height.
Sara Garringer added a victory in the discus at 89 feet, two inches, and the Jay County team of Brittany O’Dell, Sara Mescher, Nicole Pfeifer and Jessica Heitkamp took the 4x100 relay in 55.1.
“Our distance did all right, and we picked up a lot of second and third place finishes that were real important tonight,” said Caldwell. “In long jump we were second and third. High jump we got a nice surprise and were first and second there. Our shot and disc (did pretty well) ... Those were places I was worried about coming into tonight.
“Overall I thought our kids really gutted it out and got a good win. South Adams is a very quality team. They are really good this year.”
Sophomore Katie Weaver, who is still undefeated on the year, took her usual role as the Starfires’ top scorer, finishing first in the 100 dash (12.84), the 200 dash (27.97) and the long jump (15 feet, 31/4 inches). Minnich dominated both hurdle races, finishing first in the 100 (17.0) and the 300 (53.0).
Other Starfire wins came from Haleigh Lehman in the 1,600 run (5:43) and Stephanie Kruse in the shot put (30 feet, three inches).
Heath Lehman and Michael Lehman carried the boys team to victory as they were on the winning 4x800 relay team (9:21.85) in addition to dominating the two long distance races.
Heath took first place in both the 1,600 and 3,200 runs in times of 4:52.89 and 10:54 respectively. Michael was less than a second behind him in the 3,200, and finished second in the 1,600 in 5:02.84.
South Adams was also dominant in the hurdles with Josh Cisney and Darius Martens. Cisney was first in the 110 hurdles in 16:15 with Martens second, and Martens took the 300 hurdles in 45.58 with Cisney in second.
Adam McLaughlin added a win in the 800 run in 2:14.11, and Phil Schmidt was first in the long jump at 18 feet, 31/4 inches. The Starfires also took the victory in the 4x100 relay.
Despite winning three of the four field events, Jay County coach Greg Garringer said he had hoped for more from his team at this point in the season.
“We’re not quite where I wanted to be in the last two meets — Mississinewa and South Adams,” said Garringer, whose team will compete three more times this week. “We’re not a strong dual meet team. We’re an invitational team. We’ve got two invitationals this week and we’re looking to stack some events and start thinking about what we’re going to do when we get to conference and sectional.”
Joseph Vormohr and Justin Gilbert earned half of the Patriots’ six individual wins against South Adams.
Vormohr was first in the discus (139 feet, one inch) and shot put (44 feet, 51/2 inches), with teammate Steven Castillo second in both events. Gilbert took the 100 dash (11.43) and the 200 dash (23.61).
Mark Kelly added a win in the high jump (six feet, two inches), and Adam May was first in the 400 dash (55.26). Jay County also won the 4x400 relay.[[In-content Ad]]
