RICHMOND — Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team just couldn’t keep up with the Richmond Red Devils Thursday in a 43-17 defeat.

Aaron Daniels just missed reaching double figures for Jay County, scoring all of his nine points in the first half. Brandon Buckland and Michael Jobe added three points apiece.

Former SA coach fired

FORT WAYNE — Doug Noll, a former South Adams High School boys basketball coach, was fired as the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne men’s coach Wednesday.

Noll had a record of 40-119 in his five-plus seasons at the helm. He has also coached at the college level at Spring Arbor and Malone College.

Blackford to cut?

HARTFORD CITY — Facing financial difficulties, Blackford High School is considering the elimination of several of its athletic programs, the News Times reported Thursday.

Most freshman teams have already been eliminated at Blackford, and athletics director Marty Daniel announced at a meeting Monday that the remaining freshman teams and some varsity sports could face the same fate. He said if a lack of funding continues, he would recommend that the school board cut varsity girls and boys soccer, varsity gymnastics and freshman volleyball for the 2005-06 season.

The only other freshman team still in existance at Blackford is the freshman boys basksetball team.

Daniel noted that IHSAA guidelines say freshman sports should be eliminated first, followed by non-conference and non-revenue generating varsity sports. The non-conference sports at Blackford, which is one of only five schools in the 600 to 800 student enrollment range which currently offers all 20 IHSAA varsity sports, are soccer, gymnastics and swimming.
