Doubles teams lead Jay netters over Blackford (04/07/04)

Jay County Roundup

The seniors on this year’s Jay County girls tennis team had never lost to the Blackford Bruins heading into this season. They still haven’t.

The Patriots continued their dominance over their closest rival with a 4-1 victory in the season-opener Tuesday night. They have now topped the Bruins six times in the last four seasons, including twice in sectional tournament action.

The doubles teams powered the Jay County win this time, with each dropping just one game.

Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Danielle Worster and Lauren Edwards at No. 1 doubles. The set scores were flipped in the other doubles match, with Erin Schmiesing and Chelsea Reff romping over Judy Valentine and Katie Ehrhart 6-1, 6-0.

In her debut at No. 1 singles Whitney Schemenaur earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brittany Fancher. Angie Stults added another singles win, defeating Jen Ugger 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Stephanie Homan suffered the only Patriot loss of the day, dropping a hard-fought match to Alexa Castillo at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

The next match for Jay County will be at home Thursday against Bellmont at 4:30 p.m.

The Patriots’ junior varsity team also got a pair of doubles wins and opened the season by defeating Blackford 3-2.

Jessica DeRome and Janae Horn led the way with an 8-1 victory over Samantha Rhofon at No. 1 doubles. Amanda Hicks and Shonda Sutton teamed to win by the same score over Amanda Bergdoll and Cassie Twibill at No. 2 doubles.

Annika Kuitzch completed the win as she beat Amy Hyatt at No. 3 singles 8-4.

In the other singles matches Brianne Morrical lost to Kara Peters 8-7 (7-1), and Carissa Wilkins fell to Alysia Gipson 8-1.

In exhibition matches Megan Knittle and Jessica Muhlenkamp beat Rhofon and Sara Hatch 8-4, and Ada Bebi lost to Bergdoll 8-6.

Jay drops opener

Heath Williams started the season off well for the Jay County baseball team, but the rest of the game didn’t follow his lead. The senior shortstop hit a lead-off home run, but the Patriots never scored again in a 4-1 season-opening loss to the Adams Central Jets Tuesday.

Jay County had chances in the contest, but hit into three inning-ending double plays. The Jets scored all of their four runs, three of which were unearned, in the third inning.

Josh Shatto took the loss, giving up four runs — one earned — on two hits in five innings. He struck out 11 and walked six.

Chad Keen struck out the side in one scoreless inning of relief.

Williams also had a stolen base for the Patriots. Shatto had the only other extra-base hit with a double.

The Patriots will return to the field in search of their first win when they visit Winchester today at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
