Driver tops WJ in season opener (09/03/05)

West Jay football

DUNKIRK — The opener didn’t go as well as the Eagles would have liked.

West Jay’s football teams played their first games of the season, each falling to Winchester Driver. The seventh grade squad lost a close one 14-12, and the eighth graders suffered a 20-6 defeat.

The West Jay seventh graders trailed 8-6 after one period, but took the lead in the second thanks to a 50-yard touchdown pass from Zach Cash to Anthony Skeens. The lead stood up until Driver scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Kyler Maxwell scored the Eagles’ opening touchdown on a 55-yard run in the first quarter. Also, Jacob Coffman had a fumble recovery.

Chris Mooney scored the only points for the West Jay eighth grade team with a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also had a pair of fumble recoveries.[[In-content Ad]]
