UNION CITY - West Jay's volleyball team won its second straight match Thursday to open the season, 25-23, 17-25, 15-11 over Union City Westside. The seventh grade Eagles lost 25-24, 23-25, 15-9.
Shelbi Louck led the WJMS eighth graders (2-0) with seven points, five of which came in the second game. Danielle Newsome, Melinda Penrod and Shannon Springer each added six points.
Mikayla Martin tallied nine points for the seventh grade team. Audrey Avey had four points.
Fort football loses
The Fort Recovery football teams couldn't do enough to slow down the Minster Wildcats Thursday as the eighth graders lost 28-18 and the seventh grade team fell 29-12.
Minster racked up 20 points in the opening half of the eighth grade game and 22 in the seventh grade contest to take control.
Kenny Wenning and Aaron Vagedes led the Tribe eighth graders with touchdown runs of 55 and 8 yards respectively. They also connected for Fort Recovery's other score, with Wenning hitting Vagedes with a 32-yard TD pass.
Trent Kaiser did all the scoring for the Indian seventh grade team with TD runs of 60 and 42 yards.
EJ girls third at Bellmont
DECATUR - The East Jay girls cross country team turned in the top effort Thursday among the Jay County schools at the Bellmont Conditioner, placing third at the eight-team event with 37 points.
East Jay's boys were fifth, the West Jay boys and girls teams each placed eighth and East Jay was second of five teams in the reserve race.
Katie Simmons and Amber Huels-kamp teamed to lead the East Jay girls in the event, taking eighth place. Miranda Gerber and Liz Lennartz were 15th for the West Jay girls.
In the boys race Bradley Leuthold and Austin Bentz were seventh for East Jay, and Chance Fuller and Kyle Selvey of West Jay took 13th. Zach Fullenkamp and Michael Bruggeman paced East Jay in the reserve race with a fifth-place effort.[[In-content Ad]]
