Eagle spikers defeat Montpelier (10/10/03)

Junior High Roundup

West Jay’s volleyball teams scored a couple of quick wins over Montpelier Thursday. The eighth grade team scored a 21-11, 21-7 win and the seventh grade team was victorious by a 21-14, 21-8 score.

Janae Hatfield had a big match for the eighth grade team with 19 points. JoeAnn Smith scored six points, and Jess Murdock added five.

The seventh grade team got six points apiece from Carrie VanSkyock and Chelsea Grady.

Fort eighth wins

Two first-half touchdowns lifted Fort Recovery’s eighth grade football team to a 14-8 win over the New Bremen Cardinals Thursday. The seventh grade team dropped to a 30-14 defeat.

Bobby Rammel opened the Indians’ scoring with a touchdown run in the first quarter, and Curt Heitkamp ran in the two-point conversion. The Tribe’s second-quarter score came from Alex Gehle, and Eric Schmitz ran in the two-point conversion.

Toby Metzger and Wes Kahlig each scored a touchdown for the seventh grade team.

Chiefs down Wilson

East Jay’s volleyball teams each moved to 8-2 on the season with victories over Muncie Wilson Thursday.

The eighth grade team won 21-13, 21-15. The seventh grade team dropped the first game before rallying for a 17-21, 21-13, 21-14 victory.

Shelby Rines served well for the eighth grade team, going 16-of-17 with four aces. Abby Loy went 6-of-9 serving, including three consecutive aces.

East Jay splits

A pair of Lance Franklin kick returns for touchdowns carried the East Jay seventh grade football team (3-2) to a 32-20 victory over Winchester Drive Thursday. The eighth grade team suffered a 28-6 defeat.

Both of Franklin’s touchdown returns came in the second quarter as the Chiefs built a 32-12 halftime lead. The first came on a free kick after a sack for a safety by Casey Kenny and Braido Reynard.

Franklin brought back the free kick 40 yards for a score, and he returned a kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown later in the quarter. In the first quarter Billy Wellman and Cole Ingram connected on a 93-yard touchdown pass, and Dalton McGill scored on a 3-yard run.

Wellman found Colton Lombardo on a pair of two-point conversion passes, and ran one in himself. Franklin also had a blocked punt in the victory, and Dexter Shreve recovered a fumble.

Lee Haggenjos had the lone score for the eighth grade team on a 2-yard fourth-quarter run.

Heath Rigby finished 7-of-11 passing for 50 yards. Clint Muhlenkamp led the defense with six tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
