Eagles shut out JCHS

MUNCIE - The Delta Eagles aren't ranked this year. But they still boast plenty of talent.

Jay County High School's boys tennis team fell 7-0 Tuesday to the Eagles, a regularly state-ranked squad that advanced to the semi-state last season.

Tylor Smith led the Patriots (2-13), who dropped their 10th straight. He pushed Young Han in the opening set at No. 3 singles and won as many games as the rest of his team combined in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat.

At No. 3 doubles Tony Schwieterman and Derek Smith fell 6-3, 6-1 to Josh Hapner and Alan Zimmerman, and at No. 2 doubles Seth Ainsworth and Morton Garringer lost 6-0, 6-1 to Zach Richardson and Brock Windsor. Jared Valentine suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Ben Bryan at No. 1 singles, and JCHS lost the remaining matches by shutout.

Brad Luethold picked up an 8-3 junior varsity win over Matt Hinds at No. 5 singles. In the No. 3 doubles match Schwieterman and Smith beat Jonathan Smith and Nathan Shane 8-4.

Chief spikers win

WINCHESTER - Katlin Petro led the East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team in its 25-15, 22-25, 15-6 victory over host Driver. The seventh graders also won, 25-12, 25-20.

Petro racked up 18 points, five kills and four blocks as the Chief eighth graders improved to 7-4. Ali Inman put up six assists, Abbi Dunlavey had five kills and Rachel Ferguson totaled five digs.

Michelle Wellman paced the EJMS seventh grade team (8-3) with 11 points and two kills. Catherine Dunn followed with 10 points and four assists, Jessica Kerrigan had four assists and Emily Westgerdes notched three digs.

Dunn also had 11 points, including eight aces, and nine digs in the Chiefs' 17-25, 25-22, 15-4 win Monday over Delta.

EJ 8th victorious

The East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team rolled to a 34-14 win Tuesday over Muncie Wilson. The seventh graders lost, 26-6.

Jason Houston racked up 116 receiving yards and two touchdowns for the eighth grader team (3-1). Jacobs Schlosser, Michael Bruggeman and Ryan Tinkham each added TDs, and J.D. Mangus led the defense with five tackles.

Nick Clemens paced the Chiefs (0-4) in the seventh grade game with 42 rushing yards and a TD.[[In-content Ad]]
