Early homers not enough for JC (04/06/05)
JCHS roundup
PORTLAND — There was some second-inning excitement. But, by the end of the fifth there wasn’t much to cheer about.
Joshua Ludy and Josh Shatto hit back-to-back homers in the second for the Jay County baseball team, but they came in a 15-7 season-opening loss to the Adams Central Jets.
Jay County trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second, but Ludy, a freshman, led off the frame with a solo home run in his first varsity at bat. Shatto, a junior, followed with a solo shot of his own and the Patriots scored four times to take the lead.
However, Adams Central (1-0) scored four times in the third inning, twice in the fourth and five times in the fifth to pull away for good.
Shatto took the defeat, allowing eight runs — three earned — on four hits in 31/3 innings. Josh Atkinson and Andy Hughes combined to allow seven run — five earned — in 32/3 innings of relief.

Indians defeat softball
GAS CITY — The fly balls just didn’t want any part of landing in the Patriot gloves Tuesday.
Jay County misplayed four pop-ups, two each in a three-run third inning and a five-run fifth as it lost 5-1 to the Mississinewa Indians.
The Patriots were up 1-0 after an RBI single by Chelsea DeBoy scored Amber Champ in the top of the third. But, the lead was short-lived as Mississinewa took it in the bottom of the frame and never gave it back.
Brittany Logue took the loss as she allowed five runs — three earned — on just four hits. She walked three and struck out five.
DeBoy and Champ accounted for most of the Jay County offense. DeBoy finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Champ was 1-for-2 with a double, one run and two stolen bases.
Miranda Betz and Erica Murray added one hit apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
