East Jay 8th is perfect (02/03/06)

The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team has not been challenged often. But each time it has, the players have risen to the occasion.

It was no different Wednesday night as they Chiefs overcame a halftime deficit to complete their perfect middle school careers with a 47-39 victory over Muncie Wilson.

East Jay finished with season and career records of 16-0 and 27-0 respectively despite trailing Wilson by four after the opening quarter and 18-16 at halftime. The Chiefs racked up 31 second-half points as they attained perfection.

Pazia Speed led the effort with 14 points, and Shelby Gierhart joined her in double figures with 10. Lindsey Wellman had eight points, and Jaime Klinger scored six.

The East Jay seventh grade team was also victorious over Wilson Wednesday by a 39-18 count.

Wilson never scored more than six points in a quarter as the Chiefs finished at 12-5. Laura Castillo scored a game-high 16 points, and Cara Garringer added eight.

Indians, Flyers split

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Midwest Athletic Conference rivals Fort Recovery and the Marion Local Flyers split a couple games in non-league action Thursday night. The Indians won the seventh grade girls contest 31-29 while Marion Local took the eighth grade game 32-30.

The Fort Recovery seventh graders (9-3) managed just four points in the first and third quarters, but posted 23 in between and held on for the victory. Olivia Thien scored 12 points, and Kendra Brunswick finished with seven.

The Tribe eighth grade squad (7-5) had a 17-11 lead at the half, but Marion Local took an 11-6 advantage in the third quarter and eked out the win in the fourth. Nicole Pottkotter scored 10 points for the Indians, and Emily May added seven.

Blue Jays down Tribe

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery couldn’t keep up with the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays Thursday as its eighth grade boys team lost 49-46 and the seventh graders fell 40-32.

The Indian eighth graders led by four after the opening quarter, but St. John’s pulled even at halftime. The game was still knotted after three periods before the Blue Jays took the win, dropping Fort Recovery to 9-3.

Greg Kahlig had a huge effort in the defeat, hitting four 3-pointers en route to 20 points. Cody Fiely and Craig Tobe each added eight points.

St. John’s took a 19-2 first-quarter lead in the seventh grade game and stayed in control. Shane Brunswick and Craig Fortkamp had 13 and 10 points respectively for the Indians.

Chiefs drop first

MUNCIE — The unbeaten streak for the East Jay sixth grade girls basketball team came to an end Thursday. The Chiefs (7-1), who held teams under 10 points for their first six games, couldn’t fight off the Delta Eagles in a 28-22 loss.

Mariah Hornaday scored half of East Jay’s points, and grabbed four rebounds. Kassie Hemmelgarn had four points and four rebounds, and Megan May also had four rebounds.

The East Jay B team also fell to Delta 20-5, getting three points and five rebounds from Maria Murphy.[[In-content Ad]]
