East Jay boys defeat Hartford City and South Adams (05/03/05)

PORTLAND — Three athletes each won two events for the East Jay boys track team as it scored 49 points to win a close meet with Hartford City (40) and South Adams (36) Monday. The girls team (29) went without a first-place finish as South Adams took all but one event to win with 80 points and Hartford City (17) finished third.
Lance Franklin picked up one of his victories in the shot put as East Jay’s boys won three of the four field events. He won with a toss of 40 feet, 31/2 inches.
Franklin was also first in the 400-meter relay with a time of 1-minute, 3.98 seconds. He also teamed with Patrick Johnson, Isaac Poole and Jacob Chenoweth for first in the 4x400 relay in 4:27.58.
Dexter Shreeve earned the Chiefs’ other two field event wins. He was first in the long jump by more than two feet at 16 feet, 111/2 inches and took the high jump at five feet, two inches.
Brandon Reynard also won a pair of events. He was first in the 100 dash in 11.90 seconds and the 200 dash in 24.26.
Poole picked up the other individual win for East Jay in the 1,600 run in 5:37.88.
While South Adams dominated the girls competition, East Jay managed three second-place finishes in individual events. Katie Butcher finished the 800 run in 2:58.59, Tiffany Helms crossed the line in the 1,600 run in 6:26.09 and Cori Vormohr had a toss of 74 feet, three inches in the discus.
East Jay’s girls won the B team competition with 77 points, followed by South Adams (31) and Hartford City (17). The Chief boys B team (25) was third behind Hartford City (73) and South Adams (27).
Jordan McMillan, Carrie Minnich and Jenna Wilson each won a pair of events for the girls B team. McMillan was first in the 200 dash and the high jump, Minnich took the 100 and 400 dashes and Wilson won the shot put and the discus.
Also earning wins for the girls team were Kaci Hemmelgarn in the hurdles and Erika Butcher in the 800 run.
