East Jay edges Wes-Del for 13th victory (06/11/04)

The scores have been getting closer, but the East Jay baseball team has still always been on top. It remained perfect Wednesday, winning its 13th straight game by a 5-4 score over Wes-Del.

East Jay took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but fell behind 3-2 when Wes-Del tagged starting pitcher Adam Garringer for three runs in the fourth inning. However, East Jay tied it in the fourth and scored twice fifth, and Billy Wellman tossed the final three innings to hold on for the victory.

Wellman got the win, allowing one run on two hits in three innings. He struck out five batters.

Garringer allowed three runs on two hits with six strikeouts in the first four innings.

Justin Mann had a triple, and Kyle Simmons finished with a double. Wellman went hitless, but drove in a pair of runs.

Gus Macker

The Muncie Gus Macker basketball tournament will be July 24 and 25 at Muncie Southside High School.

The tournament entry fee is $100 per team, and the deadline to register is July 2. Those interested in signing up can pick up a registration form at Ball Memorial Hospital or visit http://www.macker.com.

Mayor’s golf outing

The inaugural Mayor’s Charity Golf Outing will be held Friday, July 16 at Portland Country Club.

It will be a four-person Florida Best-ball tournament with cash prizes for first-, second- and third-place teams. There will also be several contests, including longest drive and closest to the pin.

The entry fee is $200 per team. Only the first 30 teams will be entered.
